I'm slowly working on building up my 97 12v, and before I start doing stuff I'm going to regret later, was hoping to get some input.

My plan for now is a mild build, just enough to try and get some better economy out of it, and more power, for while I'm towing; nothing extreme, yet.

What I've got done to it now:
factory air filter (holding off on replacing that till I get some other stuff done to the truck)
boost, pyro, trans, fuel pressure gauges (auto tranny)
been messing a little with the afc, ground the plate a bit, not much, and messed with the starwheel and fuel screw. I can now build up to 30 lbs of boost on a good day...

this weekend, I'm taking the truck in, and getting a Goerend billet single, and vb installed. As soon as that's done, and I get paid, I'm ordering the KDP kit, and a new PS pump, and will be tabbing the KDP, replacing the ps pump, and the vac pump seals. I've got an oil leak that I havent been able to track completely down, but I'm thinking my vac pump seal is out. Hopefully, that's all.

This is where I start getting out of my depth...
I want to bump the timing up to around 16, 16.5 degrees, as down low, the trucks a dog, and my mileage in town is horrible...I'm lucky to see 12-14, even driving conservatively. (It's a 3500 drw, 4x4)
I'm thinking bumping the timing up a bit might help, and then I was considering injectors.

I was looking at 5x.010s and 5x.012's, but I'm not sure what the single disc TC will handle. I'm not sure about doing injectors right now anyway, but I don't want to put the truck over what the single is going to comfortably handle. Would I be better off just sticking with timing, going with a BHAF, and leaving the fuel alone, or would there be an advantage of bumping up in injectors?
Truck's a dd, and tows my 30ft camper around; just trying to make it a little more enjoyable going up a hill, ie, 50 mph over 30...

mileage sounds like its time for injectors

5x.012 are ok as long is ou set the plate so when you tow up a hill it doesnt get that little hx35 too hot

By time to get new injectors, do you mean that the mileage is due to the old ones just being so worn out, that they're either not spraying correctly, or their leaking, causing fuel inefficiency?

As far as the KDP, I had thought about making my own, but was thinking that I would still need the seals, the timing cover seal and the crankshaft seal, so I was kind of thinking about just ordering the kit, and just getting it all at once, to save the time and hassle...Is just the two seals by themselves enough of a price difference from the total cost of the kit to make it worth while? I don't know-I haven't looked up just the prices of the gaskets.

yes its worth making your own tab

and yes your injectors wear just like anything else mechanical

I just called them...I'll have to see what their pricing is, whether it's worth the shipping too, or not. OReilly and NAPA both sell the same FELPRO timing cover gasket kit, with both the timing cover gasket, and the crankshaft seal, for around 40, and Autozone has power steering pumps for around 50ish, with a core return, so I might just stay with them locally, unless Mumau can ship the same parts for a lesser price. I appreciate the heads up though!

From my experience genuine Cummins parts outlast the aftermarket 2-1

Bumping the timing should help with the mileage, but I doubt it will help with it being a dog down low.

Is this a 4.10 truck? If so, your mileage isn't too far off. My 96 3500 4x4 has never seen better than 15 (hand calculated) I have newer 5x12's popped to 270 and 14.7 was roughly the best even with the stock charger.

No, its a 3.55 geared truck. As far as the pricing goes, I was kind of thinking about that as far as the pump went, but the gasket kit was the same between napa and the other parts stores, so I really don't see an advantage there. I usually get my important parts from napa, when I have the money, but if its a felpro kit all the way around, it really doesn't matter...
