I have a 2000 5 speed with dana 80 and when i put the truck in neutral and come to a stop i hear a weird thumping type of noise coming from what sounds like the back of the truck. Any ideas?

Very first thing in my head was wiggle the drive shaft. You may have a tight u-joint. Or you have a cable tie wrapped around the drive shaft hitting the floor pan everytime it spins like I used to do my roommates in college. LOL

Just replaced the u joints yesterday. I thought the same thing. Bad yoke?

And NOOOOW we get to the bottom of it. :hehe:

I'm assuming you can jack the back of the truck up with the tranny/xfer in neutral and spin everything without any noises or binding?

...hmmmm.....maybe someone smarter than I will have to reply. :( I take it that you had no thumping noise before you replaced the u-joints?

untie that hot blonde jogger you kidnapped and have tied up in the back under the tonneau cover...

All joking aside. It only happens when you are coasting down in neutral at all speeds or just as you are stopping? I would be most tempted to check the carrier bearing first(just because bearing may be good, didn't mean rubber isolator is), trans mount second. Out put shaft bearing third, front drive shaft next, then move on to tires (rotate to se if problem moves with tire) brakes, pinion bearing.

It seems to be just as I'm stopping. I'm have my tires balanced Wednesday hopefully that fixes it

If "just when stopping" is synonomous with "when I apply the brakes and I get almost to a stop"...check your rotors. Pull a tire and place a screwdriver on a jack stand and see if they are still truely flat while spinning the hub.

Doesn't seem to be brakes. Sounds like it may be coming from the transfer case

well now, thats not really the rear of the truck, game changer!
