ticking noise and no pwer.

I bought a 94 5spd cummins with a bad motor. I swapped in a 91.5 bottom end and bolted the 2nd gen head pump injectors etc on to the 91.5 block. It has a lot of ticking noise and a thu thu thu noise coming from the intake. I put 1/2'' fuel line to the piston pump, advaced the timing to 17*. It also has a constint haze of black smoke through all rpm and the truck is gutless. Any ideas?
