I finally got my pump clearanced and installed everything is hooked up and I am trying to set the timing but I am having a small problem.

According to the book it says to "remove the delivery valve, needle and spring then replace the dv holder then pump the lift pump while turning the pump counter clockwise to set timing when fuel stops coming out of the top of the dv holder then timing is set."

I understand all that and I have tried it, the only problem is that I dont have a stock lift pump anymore, its gone and the hole is blocked off with a plate. I installed a mallory comp 250gph electric pump. I tried turning the key on but I get a 5 ft fountain of diesel fuel (which is neat but not what I am looking for) thanks to the high flow of the electric fuel pump.

My question is how could I go about getting the fuel to flow out of the top of the dv holder while I set the timing?

Should I just suck it up and let the fountain flow and work faster:bang or can you suggest a better way without covering me and the entire truck in fuel?

Also should I be able to get fuel out of the dv holder by turning the crank by hand?

Thanks
Randy

What their asking you to do there is to use the SPILL PORT method.

Best is to use a dial indicator and set it in MM of lift.

Correct. this is also the method Sheid diesel told me to use.

I dont know how to set it with a dial indicator and have no idea what the mm of lift would be for this pump.

Any idea how I would lower the pressure to keep from having a fountain fo fuel ?

is there another way to get fuel to the dv holder besides using my lift pump? maybe I am just having a brain fart or something??????

Could not tell you on this one .

What pump do you have ? And has it been retimed internally?

It is a bosch A pump built by sheid diesel I am sure the bench timed it, I am not doubting their build skills at all. I managed to turn the pump on and off really fast so that their was just a 10" stream flowing out of the dv (this is very dificult doing it by myself) and managed to check the timing and its appears to be way off so that would probably explain why its not starting LOL. I have a buddy coming over to help me try and sort this out.

do every thing you are doing then take an old injection line, put it on no. 1 and cut it to desired length and bend it and stick it in a bucket turn on the electric pump and rotate p7100 until fuel stops that is where the pump is set at 0 deg.

I`m not real familiar with being called " Flow Timing ". but I have seen it done by useing a short line into a jug or bucket. That will remedy you fountain. Losen your positive battery cable incase things get out of control you can stop your fuel pump instantly. You can rotate your engine on the altenator nut one directon only. Sorry I can`t be any more help than that.

I would first try removing the pressure regulator or overflow valve in the pump and allowing the fuel to exit the pump body if desired and flow under low pressure.

With a monster volume pump like that you may have to divert some fuel back to the tank during the entire process. You could Y the lines and use a method of flow control (a FC valve would work great but a buddy putting an adjustable kink in the line would also work) to limit the flow going to the pump. You may end up having to find a little baby pump to use to time the pump.

Thanks for all the sugestions everyone. We finally had one person with a hand on the key to cycle the pump on and off very quickly just to get a little bit of fuel coming out (still enough to make a 12" tall fountain) then another person was checking the balancer for timing and another was moving the pump to stop the fuel.

I appreciate all the help. I have been doing alot of searching on how to set timing but this is the first time I have ever actually done it.

One last question, I set the balancer to 20* timing and moved the pump around with fuel flowing, as soon as the fuel stopped I locked it down. I am assuming that my timing is now set at 20* is that correct?

Correct. If you set the engine to 20*BTDC and the pump to port closure, fuel should begin to be injected at 20*BTDC.
