Alright so my ecm has bit the dust. What I am wondering is that if i put a p pump on my truck will that eliminate the need for the ecm. Or am i basically screwed and have to buy a new ecm regardless. Also what functions wouldn't work if i were to p pump it and not have the ecm. Any input would be great, thanks.

no tach, if its an auto truck it may not hit over drive and or shift right. 90% sure the truck will not charge either

you need an ecm

This.

Computer has to see at least 650rpm to charge. The gauges don't work unless the computer sees a running engine. Trans will be in limp mode.

My ECM is slow to react to the truck running. Each start-up has about a 15sec delay. No gauges, no first gear, and no charging until computer sees a running truck. However, I think it is possible to bypass the trans relay like some do with a wire when using a lock-up switch, to have first gear. I've noticed I no longer have the no first gear issue.

Mine never had a delay on start up. And yes, you need the ECM for the AC, alternator, and a few other things.

like posted, you need the PCM. that the reason why you're supposed to leave it on when doing the conversion. Yes the motor will run, but there will be issues. There are a lot of guys out there that spend the couple thousands of dollars to do the conversion all because they think it will be a solution to a bad ECM, then are pissed that the conversion didn't fix it.

people p pump 24 valves if they are looking for serious HP, they want to be different, or they are just fed up with the VP. you can get a ECM on ebay. just send the Vin# when you purchase and it will be ready to drop in by the time you get it and its warrantied.

Forgive me, but I thought it's the PCM, which has the voltage regulator, and takes care of the tranny shifting, and NOT the ECM
Isn't it?
