I need some help with my 99, trying to decide between going to a p pump or not. I want to get in the 600-650 range and be able to still street drive. And there is a psd that I need to put a wooping on, he said that a cummins can,t keep up with psd:hehe:, going to prove him wrong one way or a nother. any help would great thanks for any help.

What do you use the truck for?

For a daily driver, the VP is nice. It has static timing, you can adjust the power levels on the fly, the computer keeps the engine going if it starts to lug.. There are a ton of advantages.

The 600 is about the top of the VP range. An upgraded pump, big sticks, turbos, and you can get there. If you want to go much higher, the P-Pump is the way to go.

If the truck is mostly a toy (not a daily driver) I would P-Pump it!

I would leave it a VP and build it up from there. You can put a ton on good stuff on a VP for what it will cost to put the P-pump on.

There is a guy here with an 2002 that runs right at 600hp. Daily driver and very dependable.

I know he has the BD twins (modded wg), HRVP, Super Dragon Flows, full Sun Coast, Lock up box, O-rings, Edge with additude. There is probably more but its not mine so I am not sure.

with the advances in VP pumps, I would probably just stick with the VP despite my hatred for them and my love of P-pumps. Heck, I've considered p-pumping my '04!

but I don't really like deviating from the OEM setup too much on a daily driver. I'm a bit of a boyscout, and I either like to have spares or to know that I can get the truck up and running with a call to the local Cummins parts dealer if I'm on the side of the road

Not to split hairs but the P-Pump has statis timing, but I'd agree with you that the VP will make a nicer DD with the variable timing. And I'm a P-Pump guy.

Do it Forrest:poke:

Really?

I thought it was set and forget. How much does it advance/retard? I'm betting not too many degrees, especially since there is such a big difference between setting timing at 19* instead of 16* for example. How does it know to advance/retard? I don't know diddly about p-pumps.

The p-pump is set and forget. That's static timing. The VP has variable timing.

I agree, leave it a VP pump. It will make more than enough power to put the smack down on 99% of the powerstrokes out there.
