Can you take the tow mirrors off the 3rd gens and swap out the mounting bases and use the bases off the 2nd gen non towing mirrors?

I don't think so. There was a big thread on DTR a while back about this. That's why kool-vue can't make enough 2nd gen towing mirrors to keep up with the demand. People were wanting to use the 3rd gen power heated mirrors and it was necessary to have the bottom pieces/mounts from the 2nd gen non power towing mirrors.

that is some good info there anyone know were to find some towing mirrors lol

Yeah but heck they are over $200.

But for somebody like me that doesn't already have towing mirrors on their 2nd gen, it'll be cheaper than buying a pair of both years of towing mirrors in order to have power heated ones.

You just use your original bases off your 2nd gen and put the 3rd gen mirror on the 2nd gen base. You only have to buy the 3rd gen mirrors. And you can pic them up for less than a $150.

The kool vue are acutally closer too $300

According to that article from cummins database you have to have bases from 2nd gen tow mirrors. Basically you just take the flip up portion of the 3rd gen mirror and fish the wires through the 2nd gen base and snap them back together.

Or you can just go through Geno's, pay about $100 bucks more than the kool vue and have bigger better mirrors from Cipa. I like the factory units, but after using the picture windows that have been on my truck for 3 years I think a Ford factory mirror is a might on the small side LOL LOL

Dude those things are hideous.

yeah, but you don't have to kill 2 sets of mirrors... plus the 05+ Dodge power mirrors don't match the 2nd gen bases. plus the tow mirrors always wear out and start to vibrate.

I've built my own in the past, I'd buy nice new ones for $300 every time!!!!

yes, they're horrible!

They are HUGE!...not hideous or horrible LOL LOL

I've pulled a smaller GN with another truck that had the factory tow mirrors, the vision they provide is not all that great, at least compared to what I have with the CIPA's. To each their own though, I care much more about functionality than I do looks, as for their intended function, you can't beat them IMHO.

where are you getting pairs of power/heat 3rd gen tow mirrors for under $150!? I'll buy 10 pair right now for $100/pair if they're in good shape.
