Towing Tire Size

What are you 4wd guys that tow often using for tire size vs. your gear ration?

Truck I have has 4.10 rations, and I bought it with already having 315-75-16 tires. ( 34.6 tall, 12ish wide).

Truck feels like a dog with these tires. And, I would eventually like to put this truck to work a little more.

What say you guys/gals?

I run 285's with 4.10's on my 04 auto. Stock 235's feel gear bound to me.

I'm tossing some RPM numbers around to see if a 265 or 285 is going to be best.

Are you using a spacer with the 285 tires on stock wheels?

1" spacer stock inner wheel, aluminum outer. I'm running hankooks at the moment with good clearance but anything much wider need more spacer. I'd run 35's but cant get under my wedge trailer.

245-19.5's around 34 inches tall with 3.54 gears. A little high geared at 55 but great at 75.

I run 285/70/17's with 3.54 gears. They feel pretty good for the most part, but most of the stuff I tow is under 10,000 pounds.

I run 4.10s with an auto and 285s on my 03 and 3.73s with a 6speed and 235s on my dually. Both trucks are perfect in my opinion about same rpms at speed. I like 3.55s for a daily driver but a tow pig they are too tall IMO

I'm running 1" now with the 315 tires, and they touch at the bottom just a bit. These tires also give me the issues of getting under trailers as well, gooseneck mainly.

I have debated the 19.5 route. But, next to buying new, they are a bit difficult to track down from used vehicles.

I run 305/65/17 on my 06 with G56 and 3:73 rear. Tows great for everything I use it for, up to 14kish.

 

[Red Sleeper]

285/70/17 tires, 3.73 axle ratio, .69 4th gear ratio. Tach shows around 1850rpm at 65 mph. This is on my 05 CR.
