ok here is the deal, dad is getting atranny out of the city in his pick up and if he likes it that means that i am getting one from the same dude. so tomorrow i am going to get his number and talk to the guy somtime this week about what all goes sinto these transmissions. what are some kind of questions that i need to ask him? i have 0 knoweledge about trannies and need some help here. i was goin to go with goerend but dad is pretty set on this deal hes got goin, so we will see how it works out. what things need to be upgraded, i know there needs to be a torque converter and vb upgrade and clutchs and the input shaft, but what else? any ideas will help! thanks inadvance

I'd ask if they'd build with parts from a vendor of your choosing.

IIRC Dave has worked with local builders before...

Here are some good tidbits :)
Ask him about his building process as well. Does he completely take a part the old unit and replace all bearing and seals with new ones? (every unit should have this done) Does he inspect all the parts and use high quality parts as replacements? Ask him which parts he throws away and which he reuses. Ask him how long does it take to replace/fix a unit under warranty. You shouldn't be waiting more than 2 days for a replacement/fixing if its under warranty.

oh yeah its got a 12month 12,000 mile warrenty

Does that warranty include abuse from engine modifications or your heavy foot coming out of the BBQ joint? Determine what HP and Tq goals you have before picking one. You don't want to do it again. How much power does he say it will hold?

What clutches are going back in? Greens, Reds, Black.
Does he use new steals? He should.
Will he be useing 400 grit sand paper to hone down the sealing points of the VB? With the increased fluid pressure that SHOULD come with the VB shift kit, everything needs sealed tight.
Ask him what the fluid pressures are going to be when he is done.
He should be asking you how firm of a shift you want and what hp you will be churning.
12-12 warranty isn't that great on a built tranny. I have seen 2 yr unlimited miles from others.

I completely agree.... i got screwed over once and ill tell ya what .....six grand of trans that is crap after one year SUCKS.... Do it once ... Do it right

the company is blumnthal out of okc. any of yall heard of it? just wondering, i dont know why i didnt put that in there before

Greens are stock, reds are high performance, and blacks are extreme performance. Make sure they are Reybestos brand. Price, of course increases with higher grade clutch. Greens are good, but don't hold as much. Reds are high holding, but wear out faster. Blacks are best of both.

Blumnthals is very respected in the manual, transfer case world.

I'd trust them. I actually want them to put new synch's in 3rd gear for me....but not for the $1100 they want to do it. $575 bench charge, $375 for all new synch's, then $150 to pull the tranny and put it back. HORSE CRAP!!! :D

thats good to hear some positive feed back. dad should take his pickup there sometime this week, so i will gat to drive it over spring break. he got 135000 on the factory one, not to bad for a farm truck i think.
