I got a buddy who wants to swap trannies. He has an ATS stage 2 (No Billet shafts) for my 6-speed! it has a suncoast converter, his truck is an 01' mine is an 02'!

how bad would it be?

I know I would at least need a billet input, but what else?

Roughly what would it cost to have the input installed?

Is the stage 2 ats the same clutch and modification wise as say one the full billet ones?

school me? I am auto illiterate

This conversion would be a time killer. You would have to swap wiring lumes, steering columns, and install the heat exchanger. It would be easier to swap trucks. lol

alot more than that transfer cases, pedals, trans adapter plates, apps linkages, trans cooler, drive shafts, dash gauge cluster, dash wire harness, engine wiring harness, ect.

his truck is a POS, with a new tranny! I don't want it! I have just seen where alot of people have done this swap! and hoped for some insight!

the reason: I wanna go fast!

Im not sure about the REs.
I just did a NV4500 ro 47RH swap.
I personally think thi was THE best upgrade I have done, especially if you like to drag race.

Its not that hard of a job. Only parts needed besides the trans is:

Auto trans mount (not the rubber piece)

Tcase input shaft for an auto, or his t-case

Tcase linkage from the auto. The adjuster rod is longer and the mount is different.

shorten rear drive shaft (I went with a one piece 4"-.095 wall) so far no vibration up to 110 on the highway. Makes removing driveshaft SIMPLE!! 4 bolts on the pinion.

Lengthen front drive shaft

TV/kickdown cable

Some kind of shifter (I have a B&M floor shifter)

Trans coolers. I did a B&M supercooler in front of the radiator and a Derale atomic cooler with fan and thermostat under the bed.

You will also need his PCM and ONLY the trans part of the wiring harness.

If you put both trucks side by side, you could do the swap in a weekend.

I would put a billet input in at the BARE minimum. If the stocker breaks, it could take out the converter and other internals.

As far as the intermediate, alot of the builder say it isnt needed.

The output can be swapped with the trans in the truck (I think) and it wont take out any other parts, so its not needed right away.

Thanks! I figured that about the input! We can just swap everything instead of having to shorten drveshafts and stuff right?

remember the rear ends are different auto is the 70 stick is the 80 unles the auto is a dually. and the wiring harness for the tranny is easily removed from the engine harness at the two big plugs at the fire wall. motor harness is seperate.

Not to step on your toes but autos, 2500 srw, do come with dana 80s. Dads got an 01' 2500 auto with dana 80 in the rear with 4:10s.

He may just have ATS parts in the trans with a suncoast converter. Several different reasons to have a different companys converter.

I say go for it. Built autos are way to much fun.

Ats tranny bought without a converter, and suncoast converter bought seperate!

the two things I am worried about is:

1. shifter? both trucks?
2. Pedals?

Edit: what would it cost to have a billet input installed roughly? and make sure the tranny is perfect?

pedals about 20 min job just pull the rod they pivot on and drop them out. as for shifter like they said you will have to change colums ans have to do some work on the floor of your truck after you are left with a hole. i think the clutch pedal wires are already under the dash on the auto truck (they are on the 12v) and just swap the tranny harness they are seperate from the engine harness on the 24v trucks. it will be time consuming.

input shaft is around $700.00. most tranny shops are going to say that it needs to be rebuilt so they can make money.
but it will take 20mins to change out the input shaft on a tranny that have been removed.

If changing the input on an auto is anything like changing the input on a stick then it shouldn't take them anytime at all.

Hmmm... ok well let me think about this a min

i can pull the tranny, replace input shaft and replace tranny in the race truck in less then 2 hours. that is something i have had to do from time to time.
