Not sure which year section to put this in but hopefully you guys can help a bit. I have already called Peter at southbend, Vallair and a guy at bluementhol, while they were all helpful and friendly, none of them knew for sure. I am putting a G56 into my first gen. I am trying to get as much info as I can on engine adapter plates, starters and clutches. I have the transmission (early g56), a second gen adapter plate and starter. Now I need to decide on a clutch.
Here is what I know.
-A guy put a g56 into his first gen using a second gen engine adapter, second gen starter and a third gen con ofe clutch and it works well.
-Third gen adapter plates have a different bolt pattern than a 12 valve. (also read somewhere that there are a couple different third gen ones?)
-I have a SBC DD with my getrag now and really like it and want a DD for my g56.
Here's what I need to know.
-How different is the third gen engine bolt pattern? Some have said 1 bolt is different others said 3 are different.
-Do a third gen single disc flywheel and dual disc flywheel have the same ring gear spacing? If its the same, I should be ok with using the second gen starter with the third gen dual disc flywheel.
-How thick is a third gen adapter plate? ( I can use this to compare to my second gen plate)
-Is a starter spacer AND/OR flywheel spacer used in second and third gen DD applications? (my getrag has a starter spacer to run the DD, no flywheel spacer)
Looking at the length of splines sticking out the front of the trans, I am thinking I will need the just right combo of spacing to get the splines fully engaged in the discs and not have the discs hit the front on the input shaft bearing retainer. The thicker/thinner adapter plate controls how close the trans is to the block and the flywheel thickness and ring gear spacing determine starter spacing. Maybe a custom flywheel spacer and/or starter spacer will be in order to attain my goals. I would love to just have all the parts and play with it but once I take this all apart it needs to go back together in a timely fashion. A friend is willing to let me use his lift and trans jack but I don't want to tie his shop up for a long time mixing and matching parts, or waiting for parts. Trying to get it all lined up before hand. Thanks guys!

should be able to just use a second gen plate and starter to bolt it on. buddy did that for a nv5600 in his 94, and I think the nv5600/g56 trans interchange. not sure if your flywheel is compatable or not but you'll probably need a new clutch setup anyways for the bigger splines, and they come with a flywheel so that should work, just get a 13" conversion setup.

the 6 speed with 13" clutches need a starter spacer you can get from Valair. The 3rd gen plate has just one bolt that doesnt line up. It wont hurt to be short one...done it a few times on my own stuff. Plates are all the same depth so just order the clutch you want for a G56 trans and be happy.

Thanks for the help! So if a second and third gen adapter plates are the same thickness then the second gen one I bought will work just fine, and I'll order a G56 DD clutch and get ready for some smooth shifting!

first gen adapter plates are different for depth, and so is the bellhousing

In order to use a second gen adapter you have to use the second gen bellhousing

Easy to tell aprt - the first gen uses a front mount slave and the second gen uses a rear mount slave
