Ok......I've posted about this before but don't think I ever got a response so ::flamesuiton::

My 99 had a good rebuild by a local reputable shop last summer by my friend the previous owner. The one and only thing that it does that I do not like it that it does not downshift until it pulls all the way down to 1400RPM's, but then it unlocks the TC too and that jumps rpm's all the way up to 2500-2700.

I have adjusted all the slack out of the trans cable in the APPS bracket. The trans shop says replace the cable altogether, and if that doesn't fix it then he can change a spring in the VB that will make it downshift sooner but doesn't think I will be happy with it. He wants me to purchase the cable(dealer only item) first and replace it and see if that solves my prob before he drops the VB out?

What do I do to get it to downshift sooner? Don't say hit the OD button when I start up a hill, I shouldn't have to if the trans was adjusted properly. Let me just say this thing is a blast to drive unloaded, it shifts fine but this one little detail drives me batty!:bang While hauling my puller all over the state of KY's hills through the summer!

Thoughts? Suggestions?

Doesnt that truck have larger tires Mark? Wouldnt that throw it off if it wasnt recalibrated to that tire size?

Nope 265 Nitto's E range Andy. 55/60mph = 1500rpm. I "want" 285's but not until Coon Smile & I swap axles and I get some 4.10's under this thing. Ran the 305's off my puller on it for a while it was bogging @ 1450-1500 @ 55mph

Mark, Have you talked to joe about this? And by the way don`t go to the dealer and pay $75 for a TV cable. it`s not a dealer only item. I can give you a guys name and number to call that can give you a second opinion on shiftpoints if you wanna talk to him. Shoot me a text.

This may be way off base...but the TC has to unlock before the tranny will down shift out of OD. So maybe you could do something with the TPS so it will unlock the TC sooner??? I don't know...just a thought!

I thought about suggesting this, but considering that this isn't a mechanical pump truck I don't think that would be a good idea.

I just got off the phone with Brad's(Grainfarmer) transmission guy, and his 1st suggestion was to check the apps voltage and make sure it doesn't need adjustment.

He said if that didn't fix it that he would need to hook it up to his scan tool to check the pcm shift and lock/unlock points.

On a 47RE the OD shift points are controlled by the PCM, not the hydraulic system of the trans. It's an electrical issue.

I basically shift mine manually, and live with it...the downfall of a Dodge tranny!

what converter is in it? it hsould go pretty low before it downshifts, the problem usually is that the factory converter is so inefficient that when it comes out of lockup you get a huge jump in rpm.

No clue what brand, its a aftermarket single disk billet but its not a "brand name" that we're accustomed to. It only drops 300/400rpm when the convertor locks.

I'm going to check my apps voltage either tomorrow afternoon or Saturday sometime, but will report back what I find.

Back TTT....

Had my truck taken to Brad (Grainfarmers) transmission guy this week with my empty gooseneck so that he could see what it was doing to drive me:bang

He hooked up a scan tool and drove/rode around and said it showed excessive locking & unlocking of the TC. However, it did not show any electronic malfunctions or set any codes. I thought that was kinda weird because I don't have issues with surging or anything of the sort just the damn thing won't downshift.

His suggestion....new valve body with new solenoids.:kick:

Anybody else have any input?

If his scanner showed it locking and unlocking that means the PCM is telling the VB to lock and unlock. The VB is doing what it is being told. Doesn't seem like changing the VB would be the problem.

Maybe change the OD/LU solenoid pack and put in new sensors.

Can I purchase these from most trans shops Dan? Or only certain ones sell them seperately? How hard are these to install? Does it require the VB to come out? Just wondering if I could install them myself?

do the suncoast reground for the apps and see if it help you any.you can print it off suncoast web site has fix many truck i have worked on. give it a and let us know if it helps.
