2001 dodge 2500 auto 47re,
drives ok, not great by anymeans when it's cold, as soon as it warms up, or a few miles it slips hard core, untill finally it takes forever and a day to get up to speed.
is it my torque converter? or..?
i would love to drop a new tranny in but being in the marine corps i make chicken scratch, so hoping it's simple like a torque converter or...???
any help appricated thank you.

does it slip in all forward gears? certain speeds? is it all the time or only after sitting? what does your fluid look like? smell like? is it stock?

the fluid is red not really burnt at all, it slips in all gears almost instantly, when i put it in reverse and just let it idle it's tugs back instead of being a smooth backwards motion, no i haven't adjusted the bands.
when i put it into drive, it takes a second or two; to go into gear, and when it does it feels like it goes in and out. then it'll stay, but if i give it any throttle it'll rev up to about 2200/2500rpms befor it starts to barley move.
it has an single disk lockup torque, and a deep pan.

Get a pressure gage on there and check some pressures. Forward and reverse use different clutches, so that is odd.

did you adjust the bands every time you changed trans fluid?

I love this question. It seems to get asked in every transmission problem thread.

yup check pressures.. maybe a pump problem

Doubt it is an actual pump problem, but sounds more like a pressure/pressure regulation problem.

Check the fluid level (make sure to check it with the motor running and the trans in neutral). The problem sounds like a restricted filter, the pump sucking air, or a valve body problem.

how many people don't adjust bands and have problems though? i agree with the pressure prob and not actual pump... otherwise he wouldn't be moving.. mine didn't at least. check all the easy stuff first..
also did it happen all at once or do this gradually?

Last time my bands were adjusted was when my tranny was built 3-4 years ago. No problems at all. Before that the factory tranny had never had the bands touched in 120k miles (at the time) and was holding 490hp on nothing more than a VB. The bands are finicky and can cause damage if not adjusted properly. I doubt it's the bands. Besides, if his tranny is slipping as bad as it sounds like then it's most likely toasted and needs a rebuild. Once my trans slipped it was only a month before it was trashed.

How often do you think they need to actually be adjusted?

Band adjustment is irrelevant to the problem at hand. The front band is only applied in 2nd gear and the rear band is only applied in reverse and when the shifter is in "1." Hardly the problem if the tranny is slipping in all gears.

I have found very few instances where adjusting the bands will do anything appreciable for tranny performance.

Yes I haven't seen a band issue yet.

its recommended per the manual every 30k... so i do....
his trans is probably toast and adjusting the bands in this case might give him a bit of appreciable difference. he is broke, it is free.
moving on now,,,,,

it went out over about a week period.
it made a pop noise when i floored it one day, then after that day it started feeling like i had no power at all, then i punched it getting into traffic and felt it slip drove it about a mile and a half and it started to slip so bad at a light i held up traffic and had to pull over...
so what should i start with? i would love to buy a new transmission, just don't have to funds.
should i start with a valve body, torque converter..?

If your slipping that bad I would have thought you would have torched the clutches by now. I suspect something in the convertor. I suppose you could have blown a seal and unable to develop enough pressure, but then again I would suspect you would have torched the clutches by now.

well its NOT advised but if you can park where you dont need to use reverse then you could just slip it enough to weld the steels and drive it till its really done.lol

I know this is stupid but did you check the fluid in neutral?
pull the T.V. cable all the way out and see if it makes any difference.

drain about a qt of fluid into a bottle... run a magnet through it.. if it comes out fuzzy you are done for.. if it doesnt there is a chance its cheap to fix, but you really need to check pressures, and post them,

With a description of a "pop" noise, I'm going to bet it will be coming apart to be fixed. I suppose it could be a torque converter issue, but I'd guess that the problem should go away once the converter is locked if that was the case.

If there is a reputable tranny shop in your area, take it to them and have them test drive it. See if they will tell you what is wrong with it and consider them for the repair.
