I have a race built transmission in my 96 (the manufacturer is being left out for now) with a billet input 89 or 91 % converter (don't remember for sure) VB upgraded clutches band yadda yadda. If you need more specifics I will certainly provide them.
I have 70K on it now and a few hard launches, seldom towing and mostly daily driving. Shift 3-4 locked almost every time.
About two to three weeks ago I noticed that when the truck would idle around the parking lot at work it would hit second gear, but then do something that for lack of a better description would be like it was locking the band or clutches and then immediately releasing them. If allow not to accellorate and coast it would do this over and over about every two seconds. I took it for what it was and didn't keep repeating the condition. It also would lock and unlock the TCC while in third and forth.
I topped off the fluid and it stopped what it was doing. I ordered some filters and fluid through work (dirt cheap for mobile and donaldson) which was going to be in on tuesday.
Thursday night, the truck starts doing all this again, only worse. I check the fluid, hoping to see that I have a leak as an explanation, no luck. Fluid is fine. I added A few more ounces to make myself feel better but not to overfill. It didn't help. On the way home, I was running 75 on the interstate and thought maybe my POT that replaces my TPS was out of whack so I messed with it, The truck shifted out of overdrive at highway speed, into third and wound up the motor. I put it in neutral and coasted to the shoulder. I thought I caused an invalid TPS voltage and cause limp mode. I shut it down and restarted it. The truck took off again but it still wasn't right. The shifts were wrong and I had no lockup.
Friday I got a filter, swapped it, filled it with mobil DM (dextron mercron) and adjusted the bands.
I checked that the lug was still on the front band adjuster. It was there. I adjusted the bands according to the specs on dodgeram.org. I screwed up on the front and got it way too tight. Went out the driveway at work and hit third and it bound up. I wasn't throttling when it did this, just enough fuel to speed up. I kicked it into neutral immediately. Went back and adjusted it correctly. Test drove it again, no more binding but the same problem with the shuttering and lockup.
I took it home and parked it. Saturday morning I replaced the connection at the TPS with an amp seal connector so that I could have a factory connection for the POT. It made no difference to the problem.
So to Recap:
1st: Fine, pulls normally, shift to 2nd fine
2nd: Shutters at low speed, low throttle, pretty sure it does it under heavier throttle also. Shifts to 3rd fine
3rd: pulls fine, runs fine TCC will lock for a second and immediately unlock. I can let off the throttle and it will lock again, but unlocks as soon as the throttle moves. Shifts to 4th fine
4th: OD pulls fine. No TCC lockup at all. Can't force it with the switch.
I hope I didn't clutter too much but i'm trying to include everything i've noticed.
Please help:doh:
Edit: only found normal trace wear metal on the magnet in the pan. no flakes. no debris. Truck was tuned to 300hp up until a month ago, now it's closer to 400. I started having the trans issue a week after the hp increase
