Was driving around town the other evening. Made a turn, shifted to 3rd, and the truck flat died.

It will not restart.

I checked for codes:

0500 - I'm attributing this to the ice on the road. Rear tires were spinning on occasion. Not very concerned.

1687 - No Cluster Bus Message. This one concerns me.

I cracked 4 injector lines. I'm getting fuel to the injectors.

The gauges ARE working.

I have 18 psi of fuel pressure (FASS).

Truck cranks and cranks and cranks. Imagine a gas engine that isn't getting spark.

Tried to pull start. Engine spins flately, doesn't kick in.

I have disconnected the batteries for about 10 mins, and it did not clear any codes. The truck is sitting with cables off all day today.. Will be about 24 hours when I try again tonight.

Other variables: I fueled up that afternoon. Fuel coming out of the injectors smells like pure diesel. No "water in fuel" light.

My FMS shows connection to VP good. Also shows pump tap wire signal good when it cranks. (normal.)

Thinking fried ECM or PCM. Any thoughts?

Thanks in advance!!

Try shooting some ether into it.....

ON EDIT:

Pull the grid heater fuse before doing this LOL

Hmm. I can give that a shot.

Mind sharing your thoughts? Thinking that something is wrong with the fuel, so the engine will kick over on ether... ?

I guess what is a little weird is that I'm getting fuel up to the injectors. I cracked 4 of them, and didn't get a significant amount of air, or ANY change in how the truck sounds when cranking.

I'm guessing you got a bad load of fuel if you are getting fuel all the way up there and it is not running, or you sucked some air into the system going around the curve... How much fuel is in the truck and when did you get it?

Of course the crapped out ECM could be it too You slapped a scantool on it yet?

I don't have a scan tool. I just pulled the codes using the key.

The truck is plum full of fuel. Filled up at a busy Texico on a main drive.

I guess I have a hard time with the fuel idea since the truck didn't have ANY symptons of weird fuel.

It was driving and running perfect one second, then completely shut down and will not restart the next. It was as though someone flicked the switch. No sputtering, no surging, no knocking or weird noises. Just flat shut down.

The other thing is the codes. If it was fuel, I don't think it would throw any codes. But I have this strange 1687 code.

I do have an extra ECM. I think the very next step is to swap ECMS... Unless someone else has experience or ideas?

just cuz you got fuel doesn't mean the VP ain't dead----I'm guessing dead VP---I think 1687 is the VP-----you're probably not getting enough pressure to pop the injectors----chris

Hey welcome to my world. Mine did the same thing. Two VPs and still wont run, I can hit it with starting fluid and she will fire and run fine but wont start if I shut it off. I think the ECM is crapping out. I got the no bus message when I put the scan tool on then about 15 codes about ecm not comunicating today.

Actually, the 1687 is "No Cluster Bus Message."

You are thinking of 1688 and 1689, which are the codes that usually show up when the VP is toast. I'm not saying that it CAN'T be the VP, but it just isn't showing the usual SIGNS of a dead VP.

Dazed: Thats not the best news in the world. Thank God I have an extra ECM in the garage. That is going to be next. If I could stop working these ****ing 15 hour days I may be able to get something accomplished.

Any Ideas on what would cause an ECM to chit the bed all of a sudden?

I have no idea, when mine died all the guages went nuts it threw some codes for dead pump and all kinds of other things. I had about 15 codes that it threw.

Update:

Installed the new ECM and truck will still not start.

I cracked 4 injectors. Spun engine until there was a small puddle of diesel under the truck. Reconnected everything and the truck still will not start.

Fried VP-44? Truck is only throwing 1 code now that the ECMS have been swaped. It is the 1693 code.

If your getting fuel to the injectors its not a VP. I found out that my lift pump is bleeding off.

Thats strange.

I have a FASS. I'm getting 18 psi when I turn the key on, and it sits around 16-17 as the truck cranks. Doesn't drop below that.

I dont know. Mine will build up to 15psi but as soon as the pump shuts off it drains back.

how much fuel is coming out of the injectors....a little may not start the truck....a lot should start it

need a lot of fuel pressure to pop the injectors.

Well, I had to work on it myself. So I can't actually WATCH to fuel come out of the injector tubes.

I had enough fuel coming out that in a couple of 5-10 second bursts of cranking, I had a puddle of diesel under the very back of the engine about the size of a dinner plate. Probably a little bigger then that.

I was given some great advice on how to use a set of jumpers to bypass all electronics and fire the engine off the VP alone. I'm going to try that this weekend. Basically, I was given the ultimatium that if the jumpers start the truck, there is something more I need to find. If they don't, the VP is FRIED.

Sounds almost the same as mine problem, but my truck has started and is running okay w/o the box on. mine spit the same code 1693. Mine holds good pressure, but when I unhook the ground on the pusher pump and rev the truck to 2000rpms, it spits and sputters almost quits then comes back to normal. I was going to try the same jumper box to bypass the engine electronics and fire the engine, so let me know how it goes.

All the denial in the world won't help me now.. Borrowed a Smarty and read the codes.

Put a fork in err, the VP is FRIED. :bang :bang

I figured that if I had to replace the darn thing, I might as well upgrade. My original plan was to slap a S.O. pump on it..

Called Rip at Source Automotive and explained what I wanted to do. Decided to go with a different pump that is supposed to fuel like an H.O. pump down low, and an S.O. pump at upper RPMS.. I can't remember the name he gave it, but I can't wait to see what it does when I get everything hooked back up.. :Cheer: :Cheer:

In usual Source Automotive fashion, the pump arrived THE NEXT DAY! They rock.
