Truck not shifting right

I just wanted a few different opinions, I have a 99 the truck has not shifted right from the day I bought it. At first I thought the trans was just shot but now I think otherwise.
When I got the tuck home I was checking all the fluid, looking it over, :blahblah1:. I found the transmission fluid was not on the stick
5 quarts later the truck shifted alot better(but still not that great).
Then one saturday I had just finished putting all the trim back on went to drive it around and got at dead pedal. I performed the simple apps reset and the truck drove like a whole new truck (shifted like it should went throught the gears smooth and fairly firm). After driving it 2 or 3 times the truck is not shifting very well hunting for the proper gear hanging up from 2nd to 3rd I just wanted to know if the apps sensor would make the transmission shift erratic like that. The truck also came with an old banks box on it, I was wondering if that could be causeing the problem too?

check the tv lever. try reseting it. it should start moving as soon as you move the pedal and at WOT it should be at full tv.

Thanks again guys!! I adjusted the T.V. cable tonight and it actually shifted some what normal. I think I still need to play with it some to get the trans. to shift where I want.
I think I need to adjust the bands but I don't really want to throw that kind of money(filter and fluid) at the trans it is shot anyways!

I have another question now guys. My transmission will not shift out of first at all now, any ideas on what could cause the problem?
It's really wierd because I drove the truck around all friday night and the truck did really well, then went to run some errands of sat morning and it did not shift out of 1st.The trans is full of fluid, I adjusted the tv cable, I reset the apps with the adjustment of the tv cable, I pulled off the banks ottomind just incase that was causing problems.
I was thinking draining the fluid and droppipng the pan to see if I could find anything out of the ordinary in there. While I am doing that adjusting the bands. Do you all think I am on the right track?

That problem is the speed sensor 99% of the time. It is the one in the rear of the trans

Cool Thank you I will check that out! Does it usually just require a new sensor or can you clean it off?
This is kind of a dumb question as well but will the speeed sensor on the rear diff. cause that problem as well or is that only for the abs?

Most of the time no you cant clean it but its worth a shot. The speed sensor in the rear is for abs and speed o only.

You can get them online or I know napa sells them. It will be alot cheaper than the dealer

If the speed sensor in the overdrive section doesn't fix it, then change the governer pressure sensor (transducer) that's on the valve body... I've had to change the transducer on mine and it was causing it to hang in 1st gear.

Thanks for the ideas guys.
I finally got the truck home last night I had to trailer it from my moms house about 20 miles from my house.
CL2000: Where is the speed sensor located? do you know of any way to test it(like checking resistance through the coils,or spinning the tires and checking for proper voltage assuming it is a magnetic pickup).
LAmiller: hopefully the speed sensor will fix it! If it does not where do you get the gov. pressure sensor? Is it a part from Dodge or will any auto parts store have the sensor?
Once again thanks for the input!

I finally got the time to install a new gov. pressure solenoid, gov. pressure sensor, and output speed sensor. While I was at it I machined out the governor housing to allow more fluid into the solenoid, bumped up line pressure, adjusted clutch bands, fixed the transmission output shaft seal and the transfer case input shaft seal(both were leaking), fixed the transmission cooler line(leaking where the fittings were crimped on). Sorrry I didn't get pics I was just more focused on getting the project done.
All I can say is wow the transmission does awsome I am super pumped because I can actually drive the truck now and not worry about how I am going to get home!
There is still a small leak on the transmission cooler lines but that will wait until I redo my front end.
