I recently put an A5K on my '06 and I can not get the charge to stop surging.

I realize the turbo like rpm and I try to keep the rpms up but it is hard to do when you cant get there smoothly.

It will do it when the converter locks, which I expected a little but it surges so bad the whole truck shakes.I have tried driving through it but it is kind of hard to do when you think something is going to break. It has even started surging at 20 psi when I was passing a car on the highway.

I did a 4 wheel drive boosted(17 psi) launch and stayed in it and sure enough it started acting up again. The truck is not a daily driver was hoping to pull at some events this year but not sure now.I'm ready to rip this off for something else.

ATS recommends a 1.01 housing instead of the .85 housing.

Any help would be appreciated,
Eric

run the 1.00 housing, the .85 is for the cummins guys. ATS will be happy to swap you out (for a small price I'm sure) but it is well worth it. did you buy it new from them?

Bigger housing will defintly help, .85 is WAY too small for a charger that big.

Pretty sure the 06 is his Cummins.

my bad, I assumed it was the D-max in his avatar. if he's pushin enough fuel, I would put on the 1.00 housing though, It will be a little bit of a pain to get goin, but it's not undrivable.

I agree. If it is not a DD the bigger housing would fit better.

Yes it is on my Cummins hence the Dodge Competition and Performance where it was posted on.

The truck has a decent amount of fuel 75% injectors and dual pumps, I guess I will try the large housing.

Biggest issue is the turbine wheel is not quite large enough on those k31's so you get some boost built up but it cant hold it due to it not having enough leverage on the smaller turbine blade to keep it going. The larger housing will help by slowing down the shaft speed so that it doesnt build as much boost at a lower rpm.

When I had mine I broke 3turbo shafts in a matter of 3 months (those where an expensive 3 months LOL!) after the 3rd one i put a bd blow off valve on and I haven't broke one since. I switched to the 1.01 and ran it for about a year and loved it.

How do you like the s400 compared to the A5K?

JP,

I do not know why mine is a surging S.O.B might be the amount of fuel.I read that another member turbolvr had the same issues with his he sent it to get rebuilt and it was a completely different charger?

so the rebuild fixed the surging?

When I first installed it (like the first 20 miles or so) it was a barking sob, and was never taken over 20psi. Probably had something to do with the bearings being tight. After that it was very smooth, no problems whatsoever. The turbo didn't like when I took fuel away. Running POD on very low settings would cause a surge/bark issue under mild acceleration. Problem would go away with more pedal input, or higher smarty settings. Overall, it was a super nice turbo.

I ran one on my 06 and it would surge some but not very bad. for the most part if I was just crusing in town I would shut the o/d off on mine to keep the rpm up so it wouldnt do it. I wish I could help you out more im not sure what housing mine had on it I never checked

I love it!! under light throttle it makes boost easier than the a5k. I haven't dynoed it yet but the truck feels like a whole new anamal

sorry, I saw the avatar, and overlooked the issue. I used to drive a built up D-max with an A4K, and had thoughts of jumping up to a 5K, so I have spoken to ATS alot about them and housing choices. now I have my 12v, so I came over here from a d-max site, so again, I'm really used to talking about the D-max's.
