(Sorry if this is the wrong section for this!)

I stopped to look at a truck today and am kinda sorta interested in it but only if I can get it for a really good price.

01 Cummins dually, SLT, 5.9/24v Cummins, NV5600 Trans, 4x4 (shift on the floor), has 4.10 gears. Has 277,400mi on it.

Problems I noticed:
-Needs all 6 tires
-Front sway bar bushings are junk/missing
-Muffler smashed/loose
-Rust on the bottom of the doors and where the cab guard meets the deck of the bed
-Heat only comes out of defroster no matter where the switch is at
-Missing bolts from the plow mount (holes still line up though)
-Drivers and back seat have rips in them.
-Front end is a little loose, not to bad though
-Fuel pump assembly isn't screwed onto the tank, more or less just sitting on it crooked
-Trans likes to grind going into gears, and is hard to downshift. (Clutch is new and works fine though)
-Has quite a bit of oil on the front axle, plow mount, and the front of the motor.
-Serpentine belt needs to be replaced
-Both batterys are of different brand, didn't look to see if they were both the same size or not

Other odds and ends:
-No noticeable clunks or rattles
-Started right up, no problems even at 20 degrees
-Motor had plenty of power and no weird noises or anything, just an oil leak from the front of the motor somewhere.
-Has a unimount mount, wiring, and handheld controller.
-Tekonsha brake controller

What's your guess on what it's worth?

im gonna go with around 6 to 7k, with all the stuff that needs to be fixed, if it was all fixed first i would say around 8 or 9k

I have to agree with 6-8k for it. Your going to drop some money into it no doubt. Does the 4x4 work? Does cruise work? Reason asking is usually when the vents are stuck on defrost there is no vaccum. That is like a default point for them. The HVAC, 4x4, and cruise are the only things that are vaccum operated on these trucks so if all three dont work either you have a bad vaccum pump ($400) or the hose is disconnected like mine was.

Thanks for the tips, due to the traffic conditions today when I drove it I was unable to test the cruise control. And I forgot to check the 4x4 until I had pulled back in their lot and parked it and was letting it idle for a minute before I shut it off. If I decide I want to buy it I'm going to test drive it again and take it to a friends house and toss it on the lift. They were ok with me doing this. I'd make a list of stuff to check while I had the truck and would be sure to test the cruise and 4x4 then.

what do you mean fuel pump assembly? these motors have a lift pump on the back part of the drivers side of the block, and its just a sending unit in the tank, no pump.

if you take it to your buddy's shop, invest a few bucks into a cheap fuel pressure test kit, one that screws into a shrader valve (like tire valve stem). i forget what the stock pressure should be but i will find it and chime back in. if its too low then you risk damage to the injection pump which is another $1000 to fix also.

you can check for computer codes on the 01 as well, even if there is no Check Engine light present the codes may be in there. just turn the key on and off 3 times without starting the truck, on the 3rd time leave it on. the cores will flash up in the odometer screen on the dash. report back if you find any codes and we can help you with what they mean.

Boy am I in the wrong area! Around here that truck would bring around 7-8K wholesale. If it had the original bed, and looked right, I think it would bring 9-11K retail.

I guess it would be the sending unit in the tank. It threads onto the top of the tank, well it wasn't threaded on, more or less just set on there without being threaded down.

My buddy already has a fuel pressure test kit and an OTC Genisys scanner that would get hooked up to it. The scanner would be able to get me any hidden stuff I want out of the computer of the truck.

the lift pump could be in the tank or on the block, depending on which recall was done last.

as long as fuel pressure doesnt drop to 0 at wot the injection pump should be ok, tho the spec is no less than 10psi, no more than 20. 7 while cranking.

and that truck would go 12-14k here, more if the mileage was less

Same here. Anything diesel adds a premium, and the Dodges are the worst since they're almost non-existent around here unless you're looking for a third gen truck.

I bought a truck just like that one except for a regular bed on it for $13,000. It only had 142,000 when I bought it but it needs some steering parts replaced, new tires, and now a lift pump. I also have a 8'6' unimount plow I'm lookin to get rid of since I can't seem to find a mount to get it on said truck.

Good chance that oil leak is just the catch bottle on the front of the motor too, most people I have seen never empty it when they change their oil and it fills up and blows all over the front of the truck. Also check the ball joints as they are known to go bad quickly and the stock fuel pressure at idle should be around 10-12psi(at least my dad's does with a new lift pump)

Where you at? I have a friend that wants to sell the mount that's on his 01 3/4ton. He had an 8.6 on it and got rid of that, sold the wiring also but is still stuck with the mount.

I'm in Northwest OH you can pm me with details, those kind of trucks around this area will go for anywhere from $15,000 to almost $19,000

Your cruise will probably work no matter what. Check to see if you have rear disk brakes (vs. drums). If you have the disks, your cruise is controlled by the ECM, not the actuator that mounts under the driver's side battery tray.
