I've been searching for information about how the grids are controlled on a VP motor, 2000 year if it matters. I want the grids to function automatically, but would prefer to eliminate the Dodge PCM. Many posts on this site say the grids will function fine as they're controlled by the ECM with thier timing based off the IAT sensor. Several other equally convincing posts state the ECM controls the grids based off a signal it gets from the pcm and the PCM bases it's signal to the ECM from the battery temp sensor.

I want minimal wiring and fully functioning grids. Can I have both?

Yes, if you key on the ecm, and the iat says its cold, it will turn em on... I haven't done the pcm removal because I have an auto trans.. Hope it works for ya!

Thanks for that. It's a stick so I believe the PCM is completely unnecessary, but doing my research there's conflicting information out there.

It operates your speedometer I believe... Sstockton had a thread about the vp44 and timing... Somebody had a diagram of a vp without unnecessary components on it... I believe roachie has one too..

The pcm also controls the alternator, tach, and lift pump. You could get around those as well if you wanted to. The grids would be easy to control without the PCM, easier than the I.P., I would think.

Alternator= convert to a one-wire style

Tach= run a aftermarket pickup

Lift pump= either key on power or tie into the I.P.

Grid heaters= use a ECT controller like on the 6.2 chevy's (no pcm). They screw into a coolant passage and cycle the glow plugs on it's own. I know you don't have glow plugs, but if you wired it correctly with relay's it wouldn't know the difference.

I don't know about the PCM, I could get you a wiring diagram if you'd like.

thanks,
mike

I think the Speedometer goes through the ABS module. Or the CAB module. I'll have to double check on that one.

thanks,
mike
