im guessing my vp took a **** on me because it through and injection pump computer failure code not sure the number of the code, and it wouldn't start and it was becoming a little hard to start prior to this. I have another pump that came of a running truck that i don't no the year or if it was a stick or not. put it on my truck it runs but it is a little rough and i checked the codes with my smarty and it said the timing is off. the key-way on the shaft of the pump that i put on was a little rounded off. any ideas on what to do now, is the key way causing the problem?

The keys are pump specific.

Did you swap the key out of the old pump and into the new one? If so, did you keep the other one? You might be able to fix it just by swaping the correct key in, but there might be further issues beyond that.

took the pump back off tonight and was going to swap keys but couldn't get it to come out. The edge of the key was kinda smashed like someone had put it in wrong before i go it, so i tried to clean the edges of the key up the best that i could and i put it back in and started it up and still didn't the same thing. don't know what to do now buy a new pump im guessing.

Boy, I'm glad it didn't come out. Once again, the keys are PUMP specific, not truck. I was affraid you took the key out of the old pump and put it in the new one. That would have been bad.

Have you reset all of the codes, and then tried checking them again? I'm a little worried that the pump you got may be bad.

Reset all the codes with the smarty about 5 times. Im begining to think that them pump i have is bad also, thank god i didn't have any money any it. So now i have 3 dead VPs, two that came off trucks that were p-pumped and mine that just died. Can i send these old pumps to anyone and get money for them or am i stuck with them. There is a guy around her that has a hot rod pump that i think that i can get for about 800 or so doesn't have many miles on it at all, made like 620 something or so back in the spring with a single 71 i think, does this sound like a very good deal?

When i went to the track about a month ago my best was a 13.28 forget the mph, and like a 1.69 60' i think. I wasn't real happy with that time. A friend off mine met me at the track with his rustang and it broke so i had to tow him home. On the way home i was driving had the edge on 5 smarty on 4 wasn't really smoking all that much when the truck was lugging. So i checked the edge to see if the fuel was turned up and it was on:bang level one. So i guess that my 13.2 isn't so bad after all with a dead vp, and the edge not being turned up all the way to get all the fuel that it was capable of.

if the keys are pump specific and if they controll the timing wouldnt the hotrod pump act wrong i mean do the same thing dont know so im asking if the hotrod pump was for the year style hp rating then it should work right. I thought the injector pump would not know the diffence between if it was an ho or not

The keys control the initial timing of the pump.. The electronics control the timing there after. They are set when the pump is built, and should not be changed/swapped/removed after the rebuild.

The problem with buying used pumps is that you just don't know what you are really getting... It is probably worth the extra money to get a brand new pump, with warranty.

Have you ever had the pump gear out of the engine? Or, have you always left it in place when you removed the VP?

the correct keyway # is stamped on the pump. call john at texas diesel power and he'll be able to tell you what key you need. he probably has a few laying around. they are real finicky and can make a truck run bad with the wrong key. jmho.
