my truck is 01 cummins... ever sence i have ownd this truck it has ran. 183 to 185*.. at highway speed... now all of a sudden it started to jump up to 205. then back down to 195-197.. it will hit that mark for a mile or two.. then jump up to 199.. if i am going up a hill it will jump up to 203-205* then drop back down to 188. then back up to 195-197.. back anf forth.. when it get down to 195, i can give it some fuel. and it will come up again to 205.. never gets pass that mark. well.. not yet... if i push in the cluthc. it cools down.. so under a load. it will heat up.. every time.... new t-stat.. and checked it. on the stove.. new one comes open at 195* or so...i am thinking water pump cant handle it no more.. it has close to 150??? miles on it...what do you guys think...

Have you tried looking through your radiator? Have you relocated the puke bottle? Try putting a trouble light behind the radiator and look for light looking through the core. The way the water pumps are made I can't see it loosing capacity.

cleaned out radiator.. and sprayed out at car wash... bottle , i cleaned it out as well..now the funny thing is...... that son ofa@#^% ran like a brand new one to day... stayed at 181.. all the way to town.. witch is 20 mile... @65-70mph..never came over 181... wth is up with that....

What did you use to clean the radiator out? Just cleaned the exterior?

The fans on these trucks will move a really amazing amount of air, if I had to bet your radiator was clogged up something serious with grass seeds, bugs, dirt and who knows what else. At least every two years I yank the entire radiator out and clean it out side of the truck. The intercooler and AC condenser can be done where they sit. If you have half the bug problem I do, clean everything out and then put a piece of screen wire over the front of the radiator to help keep stuff out.

use some degreaser on the raditor let it soak in then pressure wash be careful not to bend the thin fins. Most of the time a water pump either works or dont work. If you still haveing problems try changeing out the therostat that what my problem was it got stuck open a little

In my old 01 thats what mine always did, would climb to 205 then fall back to 190 something, then climb back up to 205. Always thought it was normal.

well to day i took off my fan shraod.. and drove it and resprayed the radiator. ohhh my.. the dirt that was in there...even my egts was way low... 400+ doing 70 on highway... it can breath... should i leave the fan shraod off or put it back on... i am thinking of eather cutting the bottem off some more... cut it up to where ya bolt it back on... for pecker and finger reasons..and.. the side panels.. on the fan shraod.. there is a solid part of plastic... i took them off....they just poped off...but on the way home... today. it never got over 172.. the hole way home. there is a 190 t-stat in there.... both gauges.. says the same..

Put the shroud back on, when it gets hot and the truck is loaded you want it there to duct the air through the radiator, without it the fan will not be pulling all the air it moves through the radiator, but around it. No cutting up either, it's there for a reason.

well to late... i cut the bottem off.. so i could get out ... i cut like 10 inches of the very bottem...... it was easy to put on and take off...... under a big load.. it goes up to 185.. but no higher......this way.. i can pull the 4 bolts out.. and clean it with out yanking the fan out.. or jacking with the radiator... but ........... i think i lifted the head... so now.. it really sucks......water coming out the back ,,passenger side of block.. looks like its time for head studes and gaskit... whats the best gaskit to get...... a stock.. or a marine head gaskit...or will it matter/ whats the difference.. or is there different sizes. to get... is thicker better... or just stay with stock size...

Take your engine serial # to the local Cummins dealer and get a top end gasket kit, you can also PM user Snedge on here for one, he has very good pricing. Greg Hogue, user Comp461, whatever his other faults, can sell you a set of studs for the best price around, shoot him a PM. Just use the stock gasket, it comes in one thickness and with studs or retorqued bolts will hold 50PSI all day.
