Hey. Im posting this for my buddy and hes lookin at getting a 2001 cummins. What's the some good affordable parts for hp that can be bolted on such as intake, exhaust, and chip. Is there anything he should look for before purchasing. Thanks

Find a reputable parts distributer and they should be able to help with suggesting the right stuff. Some of the best shops are members here on COMP-D. The first mod for any diesel should be the appropriate gauges! Since the truck is a VP44 equipped Cummins motor, a fuel system of some sort should be top priority.

If I were to start fresh this is how I would do it.$.02

GAUGES!
Fass or Airdog 150
Stainless 4" Exhaust
AFE stage 2 intake
Edge Comp or Edge Juice with Attitude which would include gauges in the display.

What he said. Look over the truck for anything that looks aftermarker, or was aftermarket. If possible try to see if the pump wire was ever tapped. Check for play in the turbo. Check the underhood fuse box. When I bought my truck there was a short piece of wire laying in there that the old owner must have used for a lock up switch jumper or something. He said it had always been stock- BS! Also turn the key and bump the starter without actually starting it. You should here the lift pump kick on and run for 25 seconds if it actually still works. OK thats a good start

i put a 5in exhuast on from rpm outlet.com it was under 500 bucks i love it, it also comes with a 6in tip go sound to if he wants to run a staight pipe i wouldnt go bigger than 4in there are a bunch of programmers on here that are used but if they work thats all that matters and get a good intake and please replace that old lift pump if he wants it to last he could run mine holley blue or fass or air dog dont care which one he wants as long as its not the stock one

thanks for all the info guys. I seen a post on the trannys not holding up after a tunner was installed? if this is true then what should be done to the tranny?

Torque converter and valve body minimum preferably. Thats all I use

Fuel system is first since stock sux. Gauges are a good next step. Add box and a valve body and he should be starting to have some fun. Intake and exhaust can be done later, I made it to 492 hp on a stock air box. Since thats an auto he can clamp the wastegate shut for some more boost, just tell him to try to keep it under 30 psi.
