Will it spool a K31?

Buddy just got a modified K31 charger from Industrial Injection with the small exhaust housing. He is running a stock 180 pump with laser cuts, 5k, rack plug, and DDP4's. He also has a helix 2, ported head, and HTT manifold, and a Goerend Automatic. He is currently running a sled puller 68, and it spools awesome, but it still pours the smoke when it is spooled up. We are hoping the K31 will be what he needs to burn the extra fuel, but I'm not sure how it is going to spool. I know it is going to be laggy, but 8 or 10 seconds isnt a big deal. Just as long as it doesent sit at the line like some trucks do for 30 seconds to a minute trying to spool. We are also hoping it wont kill out real easy at the end. He already runs about 3k rpm's down the track. His converter isnt real loose, but it's not real tight either, so any opinions on the matter? We should have it on tomorrow, so I guess we will see, but what does everyone think?

Eric

It should IMHO. But that 1.0A/R housing might be a little open depending on the converter.

+1 on getting a looser converter if possible. If he can make it over the 2100rpm hump and keep it there, no problem at all.

Don't try to kill it on the bottom with fuel, big chargers like a little fuel and more air out of the motor, then once they spool to say 20 psi.....hit them hard.

The 1.0 works good on a 7.3,might take a little to light it up but should be doable. The K31 is what they ship us now for the Detroit 60 in the place of the Garrett GT42's but it has a 1.28 or a 1.32 exhaust housing. So they have a few people that use a GT42 as a single for the 5.9.$.02

what ch'all brewin up down there in Garrard Co.? ;)

Sounds cool, hope it works out for him. :D

Just a little experimenting:drive:

Hopefully it will clear a lot of the smoke, but still not kill out at the end of the track. it should let him run more rpm's down the track since it will be flowing a lot more air. We might see how it does at Stanford(at least that is the plan).

Thanks for all the input guys. Hopefully we can have it on tonight....

Anyone know anything about hooking the compressor to the stock piping? They sent some kind of reducer deal, but we are trying to figure out how it works. They said something about maybe having to weld it?

Eric

If it's the same as a GT42, it will have a vband on the compressor outlet and they should have sent you a matching flange that you can weld to your stock piping.

Yep, that is how it is, but the stock piping is cast aluminum, and the flange, the guy said was steel. You cant weld that, right?

Eric

Does anyone have any pictures of one mated up on the compressor side? I am still a little confused as to how it is supposed to work. I will probably be calling myself an idiot when I see it, but I would like to have an idea of what it should look like. We wont have it on for at least a week probably. Broke the driveshaft in half last night at a pull

Eric

Here's the picture of the compressor to CAC pipe.

Thanks Brandon!

What do I need a 68 for andy? Dont exactly think It would spool real well with my fueling :hehe: I probably wont ever go that big as long as I am driving it. If I pull I plan to stick with the 2.5 class. Maybe a 64/14 one day or something, but that is still a few years down the road. :bang

Eric

LOL Well they always say go big or go home right? Wish I could get mine were I want it a little faster as well.
