Which one for regular oil changes? Never heard anything bad about either, but the ZDDP is about $26 per oil change and the Redline Break in additive is about $14.

I know Don said he had some stuff also.......

I have some data we obtained this week. Anyone need a good laugh? LOL

Attached is a sample of new ( unused ) Delo oil. The "LE" stuff. The CJ rated stuff. The Zinc and Phos are 1029 PPM and 849 PPM. PPM = parts per million

The second sample is the same Delo LE, CJ with our ZDDP additive mixed at full strength into 10 quarts of oil. Now the Zinc is 3341 PPM and the Phos is 2886 PPM. We use "fast flash" ZDDP and it will convert and coat the moving parts very quickly for fast protection. These levels are for break-in only. After the break-in, the mix does not need to be this potent.

So what is your recommendation for minimum PPM of both Zinc and Phos to adequately protect a flat tappet cam during normal operation?

What were the "old" unused oil numbers for phos. and zinc before they were compelled by the gov. to change them? Thanks for the post on the subject.

I use Bran Penn "break in" oil on a fresh motor. Real high zinc and phos for break in.

Bumping this up. We dont have this additive in all the dealers hands yet, but we are working toward that now. Mostly time constraints is what we are up against. All the different juices, the bottles, the caps and the lables are here and ready to go and have been since last year, but the time to make this happen has been scarce.

In the mean time, the additive is available by order through any dealer and we will fill them as they come in.

What about the original delo formula? You can still get it if you buy over 5 gallons at a shot.

ZDDP is Zinc Dialkyl-Dithio-Phosphate which all of the zinc additives have.

Are you talking about ZDDPlus or ZDDP plus? (I've heard it both ways)

If so, keep looking. There are other additives that cost less with higher concentrations of ZDDP.

I use and will continue to use STP Oil treatment in every oil change...has the addative ZDDP in it....some is better than none!

All the ZDDP additives are not created equally. Some are light years ahead in quality. Some are slower to react as needed to be effective as a break in aid.

One of the first things to ask is: How much ZDDP are you getting? PPM or parts per million is a good method to at least compare products with. I have had many of them analyzed at a lab. Some come back under 800 PPM for the entire bottle of ZDDP additive. That dilutes to near nothing in terms of helping the flat tappet cam engines.

F1 Heavy ZDDP is 100,000 PPM in a quart bottle. Do the math to get where you want to be in terms of dilution. The example above shows the levels increasing about 2200 PPM for Zinc and 2000 PPM for Phos in 10 quarts. Thats HUGE!

The following levels are good IMO:

New cam break in: 2200-2500 PPM for both
Normal use: 1300-1600 PPM for both is plenty

Disclaimer: ZDDP is intended for "off road and racing only" It can damage catalyst systems and is mandated to lower levels than listed above by the EPA for anything other than off road and racing.
