24 V cummins or 12 V cummins?

Running a manual, he's going to want power down low. Also, some 425's (ARP 2000's) will handle 600hp down low just fine. I would not even worry about rob bolts at that point.

Valve springs (with retainers and keepers), and head studs would be all he'd need if he's trying to keep it cheap.
Toss a s364 on there with some injectors, governor springs, and low pressure fueling. Call it a day. You can spend your time tuning the pump and suspension. Or you could toss a FMW s367.7 under the stock HX35 and have a setup that'd fit very well in a manual 600hp truck.
 
Were not. Or im not. But for some reason they are making 600hp out to be nearly free. And supporting mods arnt needed. Its whatever. Not my truck.

Valve springs
Injectors
Delivery valves
Gsk
Turbo/ turbos
Bump up the timing also free
Stock head and bottom end are fine
Transwork or in his case clutch. In the grand scheme of things it's cheap.
 
couple thousand dollars on a 20+ year old truck is not what I would call cheap. less expensive than playing with common rail injectors but far from cheap. 350hp is CHEAP 600 isn't if you want it done right.

and not everyone spins their own wrenches. 3000 can turn into 6000 real fast if you don't do the work yourself.

If you don't turn your own wrench, you shouldn't be putting any performance parts on a diesel. Holy Hell do shops make a killing!
And do you need anything to hit 350hp? Rack barrels, tighten gov springs, tack the wastegate closed, slide the afc up, remove fuel plate, stretch return OFV spring. That should do it. :hehe:

Even $6k for 600hp that you can driver every day is cheap.

Comes down to one simple thing.

Do you want to push a button, or not.

My 2¢? Pick the cleanest, straightest truck out of the group, and build off of that. Be it 12 or 24, the cost to modify is pretty much the same, even tuners aren't an argument towards cost difference since everyone and their mother is running AFC live.

VPs are easy to change out and Pumps aren't THAT expensive. You'll likely only have to change it once, and end up selling the truck 4-5 years down the road when you get bored with it.

And the first sob that says "but muh full fuel to 4,000 rpm!!"... choke yourself. 600hp can be made at 2700-3000rpm with compounds, so there's no dang point in spinning it up to the moon.

Well guys I've been looking and test driving trucks this week.

I was shocked yesterday as the low mileage (138K) 1997 cummins 12V listed on craigslist turned out to be a cheater. He bought the truck in 2002 and the title for the truck states that when he bought the truck 15yrs ago it had 130k miles on it. He said that the odometer on the truck stopped working last week. He expected me to believe that the truck was only driven 8K miles over the last 15 years. The truck looked like it had 400K miles on it and the body and motor looked rough. Also it would not turn off with the key; he had installed a fuel choke to turn it off like a tractor.

God! i just wanted to punch the guy in the face for being a lying POS.
 
I test drove a 24V truck. The odometer shows 355K miles but the seller claims the top end was rebuilt 6k miles ago. The truck seems to have just a little blow by once warm. Its not enough to make the oil cap move.

The NV5600 is a little hard to shift. But i only reference is a T56 shifter which is a rather smooth shifter. Also dont know if the dual disk clutch makes it a little stiffer shift. The transmission does not grind or slip.

The truck seems to be in good shape and had decent power but from the list of mods the seller says the truck has I feel like it should be a rocket ship. It does roll coal like crazy during heavy acceleration.

I was able to see the ARP studs, the BD injection pump and the air dog lift pump. but i cannot see the other mods without opening up stuff.

He does not have receipts for the work done or parts purchased. The seller works at a diesel shop and probably just uses parts laying around at the shop.

List of mods is as following:

Airdog 2 G4 165gph lift pump
4 month old BD injection pump
3850 south bend dual disk clutch
Blue Methonal tranny rebuild NV5600
175hp injectors
ARP head studs
Industrial Injections 62-68 turbo
Even is set up for water methanol (missing the in cab display)
5 inch exhaust

The seller is asking for $8000 for the truck. Do you think a $7000 offer is fair?
