I just grenaded the spider gears in my D80 last weekend. I think the ring and pinion are fine. But I'm thinking about throwing in a Detroit to get rid of the weak spiders in the factory LS. But it looks like some people have problems if you break an axle it can take out the Detroit. Why is that?

I don't have a ton of horsepower, and only pull a few times a year. Think I'd be ok with a Detroit? Should I step up to 37 spline?

If you go to 37 spline you have to buy new axles. Add at least another $1000 to the price. What gear ratio are you running? I have an RD80 ARB for a d80 that I am getting ready to sell.

Was wonderin how much 37 splines where... found a 37 spline detroit in the swap meet... but for that much I think I'll pass...

I'm runnin 4.10's. Would love to have an ARB, pm if it'll work.

Same thing happened to my puller last weekend, i don't drive mine on the road so i bought a spool, found one from broncograveyard for 100 bucks cheaper than yukon. hope its not junk... anybody have any opinions?
Sorry for tagn along on your thread, been reading alot about axles lately and it seems that Arb are solid and everything else depends if you get a cherry or a lemon.
Good Luck

I have had great luck with a detroit locker in my truck. So far , never any issues with it ( NOCK ON WOOD). It's got well over 600 hooks on it. And stock axle shafts. With no problems. Don't waste your money on a spool. Unless you think you need it. Or just Lincoln lock it!!!!

if you are not planning on driving it put a spool in it, might as well do it right once

Gavin, that's good to know I was always worried using stock shafts with my Detroit. Even seen SCS shafts and a Detroit not play well together. LOL.
But your not the normal! I've never seen someone hook as smooth as your setup. Even years ago you had smooth power delivery. Guys could deffinenty learn watching your pulls.

I don't know if i would trust this guy^^^^...He seems shady...:poke::poke:

I was going to do a spool but figured if I ever wanted to street drive the truck again i would have to remove it...So I will just spend the money and go with an ARB if i can get one for my 37 spline axles...

I don't have half that many hooks on mine, but I did the same as you a several years ago at a county fair. Blew my spiders...knew I needed a locker so I put a detroit in. Back then my 97 was still my daily driver as well, I drove that truck EVERYDAY up until Dec 08 when I bought my tow rig. Its still in my pulling truck and I've never had a moments trouble out of it, never snapped any axles either. Get what you can afford. I would have put an ARB in if I could afford it, but I couldn't at the time so I got a detroit. Either will work for what your wanting.

I'm a bit confused as to why arb and randy's ring and pinion say that they don't have an arb for a D80 that works with 4.10's and down. Randy's said the only route was a detroit. I would rather have an ARB, but will settle for a detroit if that's my only option. Not a "daily" driver, but still drivin on the street and used to pull stuff around.

Thanks, It took time to set it up correctly. And i have'nt had trouble with it yet. But back then i was thinkin out side the box , and it worked. And i did it all by my self .
