im in the process of p-pumping my 24valve and need to know about the cam sensor. do i need one? what will happen if i dont put it back on? need some info please. thanks.

if its an 01-02 then yes, you need it for the accessories to work, the tach, and alternator and stuff work off the signal from the cam sensor to let the ecm know the truck is running etc.

this is only if you want you alternator and gauges to work like normal tho.

What about on a 2000 dodge. You don't need it plugged in at all? Will all the electronics and tach still work?

on a 2000 i dont think it reads off the cam sensor, i believe they were reading from the crank sensor back by the starter. someone can correct me if i am wrong, but as far as i know 01-02 are the only ones that need the cam sensor adapter

The 98-00 uses a compaired average input between the crank and cam sensor to tell the truck the engine is running.

so the only way to get an 01's alternator to charge correctly is to install a CAM sensor adaptor??? I just got this thing back together and didnt think a thing about the alternator not working because im an idiot. Really not wanting to pull that crap back apart when i just got it back together. any other options to get the truck charging properly?

is there any way to get an alternator to charge without the cam sensor?

:pop: dont the 98s have a crank sensor and the newer 01 dont do they just use a cam sensor to charge? or somthing else

so i would use a new alternator like whats on a first gen and wire it up? does it require an external regulator or is that already a part of it?

Wow definately some conflicting info in this thread. I was under the impression that only the 01-02 trucks need this. Haisley sites says the same. I would like to know for sure now...

Just hook the sensors back up if you want every thing to work correctly.

I feel the same......

So who has a 99-00 p-pumped and do you need both to get everything to work?

As I understand it, the hole in the 12v timing case isn't in the right place to pick up the tone ring on the cam gear for the 01-02 engines, which is why the hole has to be ground open a bit to move the sensor into place. On the 98-00, there is just a notch in the back of the gear to locate TDC (or whatever that mark is to reference). Since it only locates a single point in the revolution of the cam, it shouldn't affect the systems that need to know when the engine is running. It'll probably just throw a code and a CEL if the cam sensor doesn't give a reading/is missing.

I talked to a guy in Iowa that welds the sensor ring to the gear on the front and makes an adapter in the front cover. This might be a alternative to pulling everything back off to get the sensor in the back. Anyway you go about it it ain't going to be easy to make it work.
Do the sensor rings have slots in them or magnets to trigger the sensor?
