Started a project the other day for my buddy, my long time friend returned from Afghanistan and found a job an hour from home. He needed a cheap efficient ride to work, long story short he found a 84 ranger 2wd 4 speed with a Perkins in it for $800.

It had been "rebuilt" by the previous owner, not exactly well done all four injectors were loose 3 copper injector washers were installed one was not. Among many other things including but not limited to..... rtv used everywhere, bolts loose and leaked like a screen door.

Well he got stuck and got it hot, with the lack of injectors installed properly and pop pressures never checked it scored a piston so here we are. I'm rebuilding it for him for nothing to help him out, it is a budget rebuild. Here's some pictures

The original head, come to find out it dropped a valve seat bent push rods destroyed no2 piston.

New used head, parts for these are extremely hard to find.

Here's the short block, he disassembled it while I was working.

We pulled the short block and pulled the pistons. 4 was torched due to injector issues, 2 was the one that ate the valve seat.

I'll get more pictures of it all tomorrow, we sourced two used pistons and I'm pop checking the injectors tomorrow. The internals look great otherwise, just figured it was a halfway cool project and some one would enjoy it.

Minimal rust worst of it is bed wheel wells, its pretty straight tho I'll grab full pictures of it tomorrow. It is a 4 speed I'm pretty darn sure.

I've been considering bolting a turbo to it, not for huge power just for a couple more horses to get it up hills. I believe they're are only rated at 86 horse factory. The poor ve has been cranked on already fuel screw is turned way in.

If we bolt a turbo on it'll a low boost set up for reliability reasons.

Got working on the Perkins today.
Here is the old girl

Here is some pictures of the carnage, no 2 piston that ate the valve seat

No 4 that had the injector issue, burnt it up pretty bad.

Getting ready to put pistons back in, got new rings for the old unit. The rings are nos box was 80s for sure. Crank spec'd out so ready to go.

After a couple hours got it most of the way together, still waiting on injectors yet. He cleaned the hell out of the the motor and painted it up.

He painted it red and black, looks orange because of the lighting.

Yeah but sleeves are almost impossible to find, I found kits that would work but he has no money to buy em. I bought the parts for him so far.

Awesome little project. It' would be a blast to rip around town to see all the heads turn from it. Good job man way to pay it forward by helping him out!

This little thing is pretty cool, it ran "ok" when he bought it and still got 40+ mpgs on pizza cutters. And the looks you get in that thing are awesome, people walk up and stare at the diesel badges under the ranger like wtf.
:hehe:

I can only imagine! I almost stuck a 4cyl turboed Isuzu in my ranger when I had it.

Man I'd like to know what the mpg will be since it'll be built correctly

I am really interested in seeing mileage after the rebuild and rebuilt injectors. Pop pressures were way low and they weren't atomizing fuel well. I got a hy35 I'm considering fabbing up to work, can you say custom header work!..

They put a Mazda turbo diesel in after 2 years of the Perkins, I always thought about putting a AC 433ti turbo diesel in a little pickup, rated at 86hp stock I've seen them put 160 plus down on the PTO Dyno.

Hy35 might still be little to large. The 4cyl we have at work have chargers about half that size.

Haha. Yeah the hy35 is on the large side for the little Perkins, I got to dreaming a little to big with that LOL.

I get to thinking to big when I got a few cold ones in me. :Cheer:

I am sure a turbo off of the 2L VW engines might play out decent on that. Or one that is considered an upgrade on the 2L liter vw engines since the stock chargers on those might be VGT. Compound a VW turbo with an HY35 and you might have something too ;)

Now your on to something compounds FTW. Pretty sure the small turbo I have is comparable to the 2l vw turbos. Now I'm thinking... just gotta find it now, lol
