2004 tdi won't start

I have a 2004 tdi jetta with an automatic trans. The car won't start just sits and cranks over. While cranking the glow plug light is flashing. What could my problem be?

What motor? ALH or the cam eater that I can't remember the designation for?

If you don't have VAG COM or a good scan tool, getting the codes can be tricky since VW likes to bury them in individual modules.

I am pretty sure it is the mk4 engine. But the car will start sometimes and other times just sits and cranks and acts like its not getting any fuel

If it is a BRM, the cam eater, I had a similar issue on my 06. Ended up that the EGR valve was stuck open, took it off, pushed it shut, disconnected it, and no issue since.
