96 starts fine but....

starts good .the idle is good.no power.in park rev to 2000 then it goes to 200/600/900.1800 rpm max in gear with no power.when it revs to 2k some white smoke.this is a friends truck.it has 355k miles.my thinking is lift pump any help? it does it on both tanks.fuel filter is only a few months old.mostly factory no mods.
 
i would check the fuel pressure at the schrader valve on the filter housing and see whats going on.
 
today the guy started it and it ran fine. now i am thinking cam sensor.
 
here is a good one.i go over to help this friend of mine.he's has a cam sensor.i get my 10mm out and plan to remove the old one.the problem, no bolt!no bracket! the cam sensor is just pressed in and thats it! thats why it ran for crap. all good nowLOL
