I want to buff/polish some valve covers, front timing case, oil filter housing and some other little aluminum parts. Anyone have a preferrence of how to do this, what grits to use, buffing wheels, etc. Any advice will help I have no experience buffing at all.

Thanks!

1) debur by hand with a piece of sand paper, any deep scuffs will need removed in step 2
2) brown wheel/grey rouge
3) yellow wheel/ green rouge
4) white wheel/white rouge

I use mothers mag/aluminum polish. I just polished my tool box and it turned out. I also did my valve covers when i first got my truck it took a long time, but well worth the look.

Use Scotch-Brite pads and PLENTY of WD-40 while doing it.
Start with the most aggressive pad and work your way down.
Then you can mirror polish to suit your needs with your favorite polish.
IF it is for parts under the hood or exposed to weather elements I would then have them clear powder coated to protect them and keep you from having to polish them over and over.

I used a scotch brite wheel to clean all the paint off, then cleaned them, then buffed them with mothers polish and a mothers powerball, they have been holding their semi-matte finish for a couple months...
