Plenty of folks have done it.
You will need a donor truck if possible, makes it a lot easier since you have to swap PCM, ECM, wire harness from one to the other. It's not a simple job, but not that bad from what I understand.

The little parts will hurt the bank account most. When my dad had his 1ton done, it cost $1100 for the tranny, $800 for labor and $500 for the clutch. However, the final bill was over $4k since all the little parts like pedals, drive shafts, linkages, pcm and wiring added up.
