Build Date early or late

whats the cutoff on the 04 to 05 duramax, when did they switch to the lly, have a buddy whose truck has a build date of 03/04 would that be considered a late 04, my buddy has a box that will fit a late 04 to 05 and wondering if it would work. thanks allot,

Early 04 (LB7) will have a number 1 for the 8th digit of the vin, late 04 (LLY) will have a number 2 for the 8th digit. LB7 also has a waste gated turbo and internal injectors, LLY has VVT and external injectors.
