I went to pick up my skid steer from a job today and the vp44 pump crapped out. Tried to load the truck on my trailer, but the trailer was too narrow. Called AAA to tow it and had to wait 2 hours for them to show up. They tow it home, drop it in the driveway and I go to start it to idle it back into a place where I can work on it and it would not start. I had to rearrange the trailers and make space to get the dead truck into a hole where I can work on it. I brought out 1 of the 4 wheelers and had my wife push the truck back while I steered it into a space near the shop. This will be my 4th vp44 pump since 2002. I may just replace the pump and sell the truck. Good news is I'm taking off tomorrow and going riding 4 wheelers at the hunting property and not dealing with any more BS.

Now that was funny. Maybe I'll go the p pump route. I just don't want to keep dumping money into any more. I already have way too much invested in it.

I'm sure you have a fuel pressure gauge. What's the inlet pressure to the injection pump?
Honestly, 10 years on a VP44 pump is excellent in my book. They ideally fail at the most inconvenient time like yours did, but 10 years seems pretty good. These are not a forever pump.

You're angry at your VP44 because it only lasted a decade????

If you drive as much as the average person that is nearing 120,000 miles. Anything that lasts that long cannot be considered "unreliable"

What year is the truck? Were all pumps replaced because of failures or for performance?

Truck is 2002. Bought it brand new. 300,000 miles on it. For 250,000 miles it has been around 550hp. Trans rebuilt at 100,000 miles. Billet input, billet flex plate, billet intermediate, billet triple disk, etc... II Dragon flow injectors, hot rod pump, 3782r garrett turbo, edge comp drag box, ISS fuel pressure gauge set at 22psi coming into pump at idle, boost gauge, pyro gauge. I'm not angry that the pump only lasted 10 years, just that the truck is starting to nickel and dime me.

I like the one he did with the valair clutch banner for a slip and slide, kinda funny.

If you don't want the nickel and dime effect to start, then sell the truck and buy a new one. Drive that new one for a couple years and yearn for your 2nd gen back. It will happen.

Honestly, there's no room to complain on 10 years worth of service from a modified VP44 pump, on a truck that is putting 550hp to the ground. And at 300k, I'd be thinking about gaskets, seals, engine accessory bearings, and HVAC. Many other concerns to be had.

Every vehicle will need maintenance unless you trade them in every one to two years. I would a good high quality pump on it and call it a day. Keep driving and yes something else will likely go out at that many miles but it's a lot cheaper than a new $60k truck.

I don't mind maintenance or even replacing parts here and there. But over the past couple years I have had to replace power steering/vacuum pump (rebuilt too many times), steering box with redhead unit, hydro boost, hvac compressor, heater core, hvac evaporator, ecu a few times (on the fourth one now), front hubs, all new front suspension, ball joints, track bar and bushings, tie rods, etc... I guess when I think about it, there isn't too much more to deal with. I know in the near future, I will have to tackle the motor guts. It does have a little blow by at cold start. It has been a very good truck. I thought I was getting tired of it. But maybe, I may rethink the selling thing and plan to keep on keeping on. Thanks for keeping me in check.

Your truck has been to the moon and is headed back it is going to nickel and dime you.

Take a look at all the parts that move and carry load. It is unrealistic to expect the thing to hold together over that many miles

Old trucks are old trucks. If you are not a fan of stuff breaking then lease a new truck.

amen to that. the wifes 2nd gen left her stranded a few years ago for a vp. it was a stokker... truck had 300k on it. I WASNT MAD AT ALL!

put a blue chip VP on it with a fuel economy mod (timing) and never looked back.

don be mad at the truck. infact be happy you dont have a note.
