Hey guys. I'm gonna be putting my motor back together in a couple weeks. This is the first diesel I've messed with. I need some tips on the build and torque specs on some stuff. I know you all have some tricks of the trade you might be able to share with me. I have to have one cylinder sleeved, but the rest of them look great and the other 5 pistons look great, so I'm going to re-use factory pistons (Have 3 good ones from my other motor). I'm also going with the stock cam. Engine is an '03 250hp Cummins.

1.) What kind of assembly lube should I use and where?

2.) What should my clearances be roughly? (Street engine)

3.) What are the torque specs on the mains and rods?

4.) What kind of oil should I run for break-in? Should I run an additive?

5.) I've read that the break-in procedure consists pretty much of running the hell out of it...Preferably with a load behind it. Is this true?

6.) What am I forgetting?

Thanks a lot for the help. :Cheer:

ARP assembly lube, as for running the hell out of it when its back togather i wouldnt do that. i would drive it a while with out a load behind it.

Break in the cam and then flog it, change the oil after 500 miles, then it is go time!

assembly lube - we use lubriplate 105 at the shop for just about eveything. it's good stuff.
clearances - rod to crank clearance .004-.013ths./thrust play.004-.017ths./piston skirt diam. 4.0104-4".0113thns./piston wrist pin bore diam. 1.5750-1".5753thns./piston wrist pin diam. 1.5747-1".5749thns./piston ring gap between ring land - intermediate 0.0016-0.0043thns., oil control 0.0016-0.0033thns. the top ring is hard to meausre, therefore the is no spec. on it/ cylinder bore diam. 4.0161-4".0177thns., out of roundness 0.0015thns., and taper max is 0.003thns./ piston ring gap with ring installed in the bore - top ring 0.011-0.023thns., intermediate ring 0.035.-0.054thns., oil control ring 0.011-0.030thns.
torque specs. - rods 1. 22ft.lbs. - 2. 44ft.lbs. 3.turn 60 degrees(one flat). mains - 1. 37ft. lbs. - 2. 59ft. lbs. 3. turn 90 degrees
oil - do not use synthetic to break in, a quality dino 15w40 is all you need. if your breaking in a new cam at the same time, a quality ZDDP addtive is needed, not necessary with a stock used cam.
run in, yes you do need to have boost, and rpm to seat the rings, put some weight in the bed, or tow a lightly loaded trailer for about 250 miles. make sure you head is torqued down good and tight so you don;t blow it while breaking in the engine. valve lash is .010 and .020thns. take your time, you'll do great!
