Engine difference: Ram 3500 VS. 5500

Guys, a friend of mine is working on a 2012 Ram 5500/G56 that dropped a valve. A few auto wreckers with 6.7's for sale said that a 6.7 from a 3500 won't work. They can't tell me the difference tho. I'm thinking buy the 3500 engine, dress it with the 5500 harness and ECM and it would be off and running.

What do you guys think?

Maybe the motors they have are rear gear train but I thought the motors from the 5500 & 3500s were the same. Havent looked at the 4th gens but the 3rd gen 5500 I looked at was not a rear gear train 6.7.

To my knowledge Chrysler/ram only buys front gear train from cummins, and they are the only ones.

Injectors in a cab and chassis are different then in a normal pickup. I just went through this with my 08. The C&C injectors have a different code and won't run on a std pickup electronics

The 4500/5500s are still front gear train, like the 2500/3500s.

The differences I know of are:

Exhaust manifold.
Injectors.
ECM files.
Certain external emissions components.

Since both used a G-56, I doubt there is any difference in the block, crank, rods, cam, or most internal parts.
The biggest unknown is in the piston bowl and I believe they are still the same through 2012.

If it were 2013 or up, then I'd have more misgivings, but mostly all 2007-2012 6.7 long blocks are the same externally and internally, it's just what's attached for emissions.

Even so, try to stick within the 2010-2012 range.

Mark.

Good to know. The fuel system is full of water too, so the injectors and IP are finished.

Hmm... That's a lot to take in. He found a full drop in 2011 out of a 3500. Could he not just drop that complete engine in and plug it into the 5500 harness?

Yes, but you want to pay attention to the externals and consider that the injectors aren't the right ones.
Was the 2011 3500 a Chassis Cab or pick-up?

I'm looking at a Chassis Cab injector listing on Car-Part.com right now and it's showing the injectors for a 2012 5500 listed in with 2011 & 2012 3500.

3500 Pick-up injectors are the same from 2007-2012 for 2500 and 3500.

As has been mentioned, it seems to be the ECM that cares on the C&C trucks, so that means you NEED C&C injectors for it to play nice.

Finally, consider that, if I'm not mistaken, 2012 C&C trucks are SCR (DEF) trucks.
Not sure if a 2011 3500 C&C is SCR (DEF) or not.

Thanks, Mark. This is a bit of a pain and a mystery why they would change things up like this. We were looking at pick-up engines. I guess to play it safe, he'll have to find a C&C engine. I wonder what is different with the ECM, as the engine in it has been all deleted. No turner was left with the truck.

I did find that 2011 3500 Chassis Cab IS indeed a DEF truck.

I suspect the difference is that the ECM can identify what injector is hooked to it, probably by resistance, or some other parameter.

I don't believe you HAVE to stick with a C&C engine, per-se, just that you should use the proper injectors with the ECM.

Mark.

4500/5500 does not use an egr cooler bypass valve, which is why the exhaust manifold, harness and software is different.

Yup thats correct

Also Ive had several C&C trucks. Ive swaped injectors out of a 11 2500 into an 11 5500 No issues at all. That being said Im not sure what it is but C&C trucks do have "different" injectors.
