Ok got the 01 golf tdi. I notice when you go to glow it it just goes on and off. I can hear the relay click on and off. Then the car will crank and crank then start up like an old idi 7.3 and smoke like crazy. So I unplugged the coolant temp sensor it will glow fine then start. My scanner reads the right temp with the sensor plugged in.:what:
 
Replace the temp sensor.

It has 2 functions, gauge, ecm. The ecm part has failed sounds like.

Not uncommon at all.

If you unplug something, and the problem goes away, that is pretty solid evidence you have found at least part of the problem.

worldimpex and germanautoparts are two good places for parts.
