Fuel filters used in production 6.4L engines have begun using an improved fuel filter to
reduce fuel 'blow by' when the filter is at the end of its filtering capability (when the filter is
nearly clogged and needs changing).
• The major change is a gasket installed on the end cap of the primary element.
• The change is also being incorporated into service filters for 6.4L (FD-4609) and 6.0L (FD-
4604)
• Below is a picture that shows the running change in FD-4604 and FD-4609.
o Filter on the right is the new style that may be packaged under the old numbers.
o Filter on the left is the original filter style.
o Both styles are functional on the 6.4L & 6.0L diesel engines.
o Meanwhile, Ford is process of advancing the part numbers so dealers and customers are
not confused when the same part number looks so different from what they are
accustomed.
