Do the ring gaps have to be just about 120* apart from each other or just opposite of each other?
 
I put them all at 120 apart from each other, just like the three points of a triangle. never had an issue.
 
Also heard it doesn't hurt to keep gaps away from the middle of the thrust side of the piston.

The ring cap location is good for the first start only, when the engine is running the rings rotate !!!
 
True, and i know on the bigger motors Cummins says to make sure no ring gaps line up with the wrist pin.
