The last Lucas Oil Division 6 race for 2008 was held this past weekend in Medford Or. I raced my 05 in the Pro E.T. class and ended up winning the class. This makes my 5th Wally in a diesel pickup, the third gold one, and the first in my 05. As far as I know this was the first time a diesel pickup won any class at an NHRA Lucas Oil Divisional event.

Ok, now that I have the press release out of the way...:hehe: This event was a blast. It was amazing how much the crowd (Divisional events usually draw pretty big crowds), liked the diesel pickup. I spent about an hour after I had won the race, signing autographs and answering questions. The announcer (Stevie Wong, the division 6 announcer), kept playing it up. I heard him one time say that his favorite race car at the event, wasn't even a car, but a diesel pickup! Crew members from other teams came over and said how much they liked the pickup.

The quickest I had run during qualifying was an 11.08, but I was spinning all 4 tires at both the launch and at the 2-3 shift. I decided to back down on the power a little bit, to run more consistiently, and ended up racing in the 11.30's.

Needless to say, I had a great weekend!

Thanks Michael. I had a really fun time.

I am working towards running Super Street. It's just been really hard getting the rules nailed down on diesels. At this point I'm thinking that just playing by the gasser rules will have to do. Anybody ever put a throttle stop on an 05 or later Dodge? I'm working with Rip (at Source Automotive), and Don M to get me where I need to be hp wise. The trick of course is not only make enough hp, but to be able to build boost quickly, and run with very little smoke.

There is always :nos:

Nitrous is not legal in NHRA Super Street. At least according to the rule book. Division 7 allows it on diesels. Division 6 doesn't. At least at this time.

I have no doubt I can run the 10.90 index on #2 only. Being able to adjust it as finely as I will need to without nitrous will be the question. Hince the reference to the throttle stop above.

Congratulations Paul having a Wally is a neat thing, and sets you aside for the crowd .

On Nitrous in Super Street, Super Gas, and Super Comp it is legal at NHRA PowerAde National events and at Lucas oil Divisional events; there is a memo in the procedural manual. I have run 3 national events with nitrous, two with the Nitro Flash truck, one with Project X at Denver, and they were thrilled. Here is a picture of the truck in Denver Mile High Nationals last year. And a video
first time a few years ago

nothing but Gassers

Here is the video, the MPH was there 120 , the Progressive controller at that time read absolute barometer so it came on at about 15 lbs of boost instead of 2 psi , a problem that has since been fixed . http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tJ4XyGdXa-4

Paul just show up , after giving them a call , I have a National event entry to roll over , it’s yours if you want it , ill list you as the owner , and do a drivers change.

just got off the phone with NHRA , there are sending a PDF of the letter , and i will forward it to you

That would be great! When I was at the track I asked about it, and the reply was no nitrous in Super Street. Having the letter should take care of it.

Thanks,
Paul

Paul,
Congrats yet once again! :clap:You are a true ambassador of the diesel movement! Another AWESOME feat!:rockwoot:

Nice, that is an accomplishment that most can never achieve, congat's! i didn't know medford was division 6. my brother has a few wally's, division 7, ta/fc, seattle 2002, i guess he was out of home division. oklahoma 2002, definitely out of division.he pulled top qualifier at medford, but went out first round.

Medford is the farthest track to the south, in division 6. Was your brother racing at Medford this time?

no, he stopped racing in 04, it cost way too much money to run ta/fc without big sponsors. he thought he could get some sponsor help, but it did not pan out. ta/fc, and ta/dragster are for the rich people with a drag racing fetish! only the top dogs can make a little money, and for the most part they break even! its just a big write off for them.
i think my brothers best run was 5.62 et, at 236mph.

I've had a few friends jump into TAD & TAFC over the years. John Hyland was the first (with his kids Shaun & Tiffani driving a TAFC & TAD respectively). He sold a bunch of stuff to a good friend of mine, Steve Federlin, who has finished as high as #2 nationally in TAD. Others include Dan McGlone, who raced TAFC for a few years (stepped up from Super-Gas), and Mike Cofini, who used to build my S/G motors for me. Dan and Mike ran low-buck operations, and still managed to place at some points meets before giving it up.

Steve F kinda retired as a driver after a pretty bad top end crash. He raced one more time (All-Stars event which he had already qualified for) but was in pretty serious pain. Nowadays he's a car owner and tuner for two different TADs.

I'll stick with my Super-Gas car. Hopefully it will be diesel powered someday soon, and I can join Paul at the points races as another diesel-powered competitor!

Michael Pliska

Most of the "heads up" classes are deep pockets type of classes. Even the CE classes can get that way in a hurry. Steve Federlin, Clint Thompson, and many others are class acts.

They had the TAD and TAFC assigned lanes next to the Pro class. On one pass, the crew for one of the TAD teams, pointed to my pickup, and asked another one of their crew members if he had seen the pickup run. The other guy said yeah, that thing hauls a$$. I thought it was kind of funny coming from a crew where their car runs over 240mph. A lot of the TAD and TAFC crews came by to look at the pickup. It felt kind of good!
