It finally happened! My father in law gave me his old 73 Ford w/ a blown 353 Detroit Diesel w/ a school bus manual trany. He thinks it needs a rebuild has 500,000+K on motor. The bed is in pretty bad shape, and i plan on cutting off and putting a wooden steak bed on her. But for now i just need to clean her up and get her running!

The tranny is like a mp340. I'll ask him tomorrow when I go over there tomorrow.

Just though a cheap steak bed would be best option.
 
Was over there this am to see about resurrecting the old girl. So put the battery charger on her and she'll be trickle charging all night. Went to NAPA and ordered 2 fuel filters. So while I wait till tomorrow I asked the old man a few more questions.

This was a new 5-35 when it was put in about 1978. He built the truck w/ a friend and bought/sold it 1/2 a dozen times. Its mated to a np435 which seems like a simple tranny. I have a T5 at my shop that I think might be a fun replacement as i'm going to turn this into a rat rod until i find a better truck to swap motor into.
 
Well. I put new fuel filters in her. Try'd to charge batterys (father-n-law's request) bought 2 new ones and bam! fired right up!

I think it would look cool to have a custom metal dash w/ these old style KW guages

hoping to get the bed taken off and breaks rebuild in the next day or 2! so i'll get up some more pics.


I'm thinking 2tone Cadillac Pearl white and HOC Lapis Blue. Engine bay done in Porsche black w/ a ton for blue pearl and the motor in DD alpine green.
 
Id be worrying about rest repair and/or new body parts before the color lol. It will look awesome when finished!!
 
you sure thats not a 4-53?
look a lot like my friend bucks 4-53 i think it shares the center exhaust port but i may be mistaken..
pretty cool no matter what it is a screamin jimmy.. congrats.
 
here is bucks latest look, he's talking about taking the 5 and three out now and putting a 47rh in it so he can drag race it..

Can you find out what the hell he has done to that engine? I want to get my 353 tweaked up before it goes in.
 
it has the naturally as blower because they are a little bigger, huge injectors i am not sure of the size but ill talk to him this weekend and find out, gov tweaked im not sure how to get to around 3500, pius built him a turbo that has a 71 wheel in the front, and is exturnally gated to 60 total boost, intercooled..
his famous vid of the detroit runaway on utube is his diamond t when he first got it running.. its a 4-53 also, his daily driver..

My father-in-law rebuilt the motor and put it into this truck 30+ years ago.

been looken on LMC. and jegs to order a few new tools!


I just happen to have most of the paint at my shop from other projects
 
Id just mud up that rust, 70's ford bodies are pretty cheap.

Mr. Ferret, it seems we will be matching somewhat. I was given a 67 F100 SB, looks like that will be my 353's new home.

Tranny is a NP435

To me it looks like a DD to something adapter that was then modified to fit a mustang transition and bolt pattern (I've been told).
