Starting to gather parts

andy, i got a 12V long block that is broken apart. Had a melted #6 piston and #5 is scored pretty good. It will need to be bored out and everything checked. The #6 exhaust valve is bent pretty good too from the slag of the melted piston getting between the valve and the seat. I'll be willing to part with it. I although I don't have the front cover or the injection system components.

thought you were thinking dmax in the ol truck? :D

I understand though, it's cheaper initially to go Cummins. Built for built though, there's not much difference. Believe me, I've checked in depth more than once. And to do either one up to be real competitive is big money!

I was but it isnt worth the extra work and money. I've got a line on a few engines for less then a grand. I havent found a Dmax yet for less then 4K with wiring and computer. That initial cost is the big factor.

Depend on alot of things size of size of cam, turbo and the amount of cash you want to spend on the auto.cheaper on the clutch I think if your starting from scratch.

Just looked on the grimmjeeper.com site. The 6.20 gear probably won't work with the NV4500 or the 47RE. I figured the 47RH has the same gearing as the RE.

Here are the gearing finals for the NV4500:

Final Drive Ratio by gear selection

1 34.78
2 18.85
3 10.35
4 6.20
5 4.65
6
R 34.78

NV5600 Final ratio's by gear selection

1 34.91
2 20.65
3 12.65
4 8.62
5 6.20
6 4.53
R 34.91

Ok now with the 47RE

Final Drive Ratios with converter locked:

1 15.19
2 8.99
3 6.20
4 4.28
5
6
R 13.64

If you could flip the rearend over and run the truck in reverse with the converter locked on the auto tranny would be great lol. But other than that I don't think you are going to find a tranny that will work good with the 6.20 gear as far as ground and wheel speed. Honestly I would go with the 5spd and run 2nd gear with either a 4.63 or 4.88 gear just depending on what kind of RPM you can run. Unless you run a transfer case which is still going to be too slow of a gear since 4th in the 5spd, 5th in the 6spd and 3rd in the auto are all 3 gonna have a 16.80 final gear with the 6.20's. the over drive gears are anywhere from 11.59-12.60 final gear depending on what tranny you go with. You want to stay between a 13.20-14.0 final from what i have seen. Hope this helps.

Have to do some more thinking. Hard to find the higher gears for the big rears and not sure how long a 80 is going to last with all the good stuff in it. I've got time though so we will see.

you can get F106's and such with faster gears, or just go ahead and buy the one with the 6.20 gear and buy some new gears for it. Might be able to sell the 6.20 gears and get some of the money back from the new gears you buy. if it were me I would use a transfer case with a 5spd and run 4.88's this way 2 have 2 different gears you can use that will be closer to what you need for the different tracks and sleds. 4th low with 4.88's would be a 13.2 final whick would be great for the high speed sleds, and 2nd high would be a 14.6 final I think which would work pretty well for the dead weight drag sleds.

5.29 is the highest gear ratio I have been able to find gears. Not many places come up on the yahoo search for gears in those.

Check out Proformance Pros andy. I thought they had taller than 5.29 available? Maybe not though.

i looked at all the other gears you can get for them and crossed them with the 4500, 5600 and 47RE. There were a few decent ratio's in there, but either you would have to have a transfer case and/or use one of the weaker gears with the 5 and 6 speeds wether you had a t-case or not, and on the 47RE you would have to have the transfer case and use a 7.20 rear gear, and you would have to go all the way to 4th gear with the converter locked to have a good gear, which was 13.47 final.

I know you talked before on your old white dodge about doing an allison swap. With the allison 5spd, you can run a transfer case with a 7.20 gear and run all the way out out 5th gear which would be a 13.85 gear. With that I don't think you would have to worry about dropping back down to 4th at the end of the track, but then again trying to go through that many gears may not give you enough time to use 5th gear down most of the track. Trying to take off with a big turbo would be a pain too probably with a light high speed sled. With out the transfer case you can shift to 2nd gear and it would be a 13.03 final and that might be ok. A 7.80 gear shifting to 2nd with the allison 5spd would put you at a 14.12 final which would also be ok.

Well I managed to get the Big Block and trans out of the old truck. With working as much as I have and trying to close on a house haven't had much time to mess with it though. I have to finish up two other trucks and slowly work on mine. I'm going to pull the bed and such off and box the frame. Maybe I'll have it together before the last pull of the year. LOL

don't rush just do it rite.and don't mis any inportant things.

Yeah that is the plan Dale. I'm hoping to stumble upon a wrecked donor or something for a engine and such. I'll start taking pics one I take it apart some more. I'm just glad its getting warm and I feel like messing with it again.

There is a guy down the road that has a F600 with a two speed rearend. Not sure what the rearend is but he offered to give it to me. I cant find any dang info online though to identify it.

Might be some stamping on the rightside axle tube on the top.
