I have a 96 12 valve and the coolant temp would constantly run up to around 210 then drop way down, I put a new thermostat in and it still does it. Someone told me it was normal, I also have a 98 12 valve and it doesn't do the the coolant temp stays steady on it. Any info on why my 96 is doing this?
 
It is normal, the 98 has a dummy gauge due to complaints of the fluctuations. It is normal.
 
210 is not bad anyway, Diesel Power Mag did a test on a dually several years ago and I believe they put a 205-210* and it was fine. There have been claims that the Cummins runs better at a higher temp...
 
The temp didn't bother me it was it the temp rising and falling what had me concerened because I never noticed it doing it when I first got it. I noticed it about 3 months after I got it
