?timing with no pins

I've spent the whole day trying to time my truck, but I can't get it
The timing pin on the gear case is no good. Won't go in or out. Timing pin in the pump is gone. So I'll set the pump to were i want and pull the gear off then put the motor to tdc and tighten the gear on. Countless times. It just wont work. What's the best way to find tdc?
 
Watch for valve overlap on number 6. When the intake and exhaust valves are overlapping on number 6 and both rockers are loose on number 1, engine is at TDC. That's how I set my valve lash and timing
 
Tried that, I think 4 times. Held the intake valve open on number 1 until the piston pushed it up3-4 times. I'm going to burn this thing down!
I've ttimed pumps several times in the past with no problem, but this one is frustrating me
 
:bang:bang:bang uuuummm never mind. It just hit me, I was going to .0252" instead of .252" of lift...... :doh:
