How much would a rebuild cost on a 96 transition? I would like to eventually make some power.

Call a reputable builder(there are several on here) and tell them what your plans are. That question is far to vague to even atempt to answer.

The trans rebuild is cheap in my opinion. you get hammered on the TC. Look around for a used TC that will save you the most cash

Depends on if you want to tackle it yourself or pay someone else to do it.

The valve body and the torque converter are where your gonna get hit the hardest. :bang

If you want to do it yourself you can purchase a rebuild kit off Ebay with good brand name clutches, steels, and seals for $150-200.

The best bang for the buck on a valve body is by far Lavon Miller (In my opinion) who goes by LAMiller on here.

Then you need a good flex plate...PRW sells a nice double thickness "laminated" flex plate for less than $200.

Then you need to decide if you need a billet input shaft $700 @ any vendor.

Just my $.02
