My Cummins needs a new turbo and I don't know what to get!!

The HX that's on it now has a 16cm non-wastegated housing and it is simply worn out, only makes about 25 lbs of boost with no leaks, 370s, pump tuning, and 35 p.s.i. of fuel pressure through a Raptor.

It is a work truck, towing 5k-20k almost daily.

The problem I am having now is all the heat, loaded heavy I am often down into third gear up hills to keep it cool. I know not making any boost is going to make it run hotter due to less air flow, but am wondering what you all think a good upgrade would be.

I was thinking either a 62/65-14, or a 62/71-14

Any opinions? I know the 12cm housing would spool great, but i know it would get too hot too fast for my application.

Get rid of the 370,s and use a better injector. that will kill alot of heat. I'd go with a set of DDP's like 50hp or 90hp injectors. they are a very clean burning. Yes upgrading your turbo will be good but i'd do one thing at a time. And see what worked. If you do a turbo I'd go with a 62/71/14 . That seams to work good.

If you are used to the slowish spool of that 16cm housing you might look in to borg warner part#177280 60/68/.88AR and #177283 63/68/.88AR both have extended tip tech and will flow a ton more than you HX. BUT they have a T4 foot and a 4.21" V-band discharge on the exhaust and a 3" hose type 90* discharge on the compressor. You can pick one up for around $700 if you search around. You can also get a tighter AR wastgated T3 housing for these from most Borg warner suppliers than will spool faster but they cost almost as much as the turbo.

Appreciate the help guys, recklesskelly, is that .88 AR housing pretty comperable to 14cm? I'm thinking i may go that route with a t4 manifold.

imo go with contagious diesel or sdx injectors, much better product.

This is what I've I've gleaned from the internet, take it with a grain of salt
12cm=.70AR
14cm=.80AR
13cm=.85AR
so .88 should be around 15cm but we are comparing divided holset housings with 60mm max turbine exducer to non divided borg housings with 68mm. borgs have bigger heavier wheels and shafts all the way around.

X2 on the contagious injectors, shoot partybusdriver a PM. You will be surprised on the price difference between him and DDP, I was!

I can't say anything about Lee's injectors, but why are SDX's a much better product than DDP's? What kind of issues did you have with DDP injectors?

they start with marine spray pattern nozzles........they (ddp) buy a bosch 370 injector, put in a ddp box and send it to your house.

ill stick with nozzles that i know are correct and setup the right way.

A 370 injector is 5* wide on the spray pattern. You can use a smaller washer and bring it in to 2* which will help you burn cleaner. Then get yourself a 62/65/14.

If there better and set up right, you want to buy a set of SDX 5x.014's or 5x.012's? I'll give you a great deal on them.

The 5x.014's ran dirtier, hotter, and made less power than DDP4's in my truck, and DDP3's in a customers truck. 5x.012's are brand new in the box.

Ya, i met Lee, "shortbus" over on cumminsforum and his home base is not too far north from me at all. He is going to be building a set of 5x.014s for my old man's superduty swap here this winter and you are right, he is very good to deal with and is willing to make things right even if it means swapping for a different set of injectors. Yes, I know the 370s are garbage, i plan on sliding the plate and afc back and doing some tuning here when i get the turbo too, as i am really just concerned with keeping this thing a little cooler. In a year the motor is going to get a going through as it is going to get put into a '81-'86 F-350. Sure getting tired of this dually leaving me buried and walking everywhere when I'm trying to get some wood hauled!
