any recommendations on a good 6000-8000lbs winch for my 20' deck over trailer, ill be using it to pull my truck to the sled pulls, and if I ever break something im gonna need a way to winch it on the trailer.

i was thinking that if I wire it up for the old mans truck then if i use another truck the winch wont have power...so I was thinking of mounting a deep cycle battery on the trailer, and wire it to that then use a set of jumper cables from the trailer battery to the truck battery, or another running truck to provide the power. will that work?

Well here is what I did

I fabricated and welded a reciver and two D-Rings in case I need them to the front portion of the trailer:

I then added the Warn XD9000i muliti mount winch

Looks like this installed:

For power I added a quick connect cable to go from the batteries on the pull rig to the just under the rear bumper and then made a short quick disconet exstension cord to go from under the bumber to the winch. I start the truck up when winching and have no additional battery to mount on the trailer or maintain and I can remove the winch to preserve it when I need to i.e. during the winter months etc...

Do you have a sams club near?? They have a champion brand 7500lb winch for like $300. I have one, and its been through hell and still works. It will pull a M35 army 6x6 up onto a trailer easily.

you can get heavy duty 12v plugs for forklift batterys. jumper cable clamps overheated on a 9000lb ramsey on my fj40. they were very good quality jumpers but it still overheated and destroyed the clamps. springs lost thier temper
$.02

Get the battery connects used on forklifts and run cables, or mount a battery on the trailer and power it from the charge circuit on the 7 pin trailer wiring. Most of the time when you are winching a vehicle on a trailer the winch only runs for about 30 seconds to a minute. One deep cycle battery will take that no problem.

How big of a winch is really necessary to pull a truck up onto a trailer?

A 3500lb winch will handle just about any rolling truck or car around, add a snatch block and it will handle them with ease.

Sometimes if you watch construction auctions close enough you can find an old winch off a drag line, low boy etc etc, and use a cheap pony motor, hydraulic pump, then youd ahve ar eal bad winch
