Can't seem to make any power???

Hey everybody I bought a 98.5 ppumped 24v. Truck has a 160 pump stamped CA im assuming california? Anyways it was a pooch when I bought it. No biggy I thought just need to throw some more fuel to it. Well ... I have put a set of DAP 150hp injectors in it, an airdog 150, removed the fuel plate, had the injectors set at 12v pop off pressures and it drives pretty much the same. my brother inlaws 12v with just the fuel plate modded will run circles around my truck. It doesnt smoke at all just a little white haze when its really cold. I still think the issue is fuel related. I dont have gauges yet so I cant check my pressures (that is next on the to do list). Im just about narrowed down to bad overflow valve, or too small of delivery valves. It should be absolutely billowing smoke right now. ( Thats not the goal btw I'm looking for power not soot). Just trying to find a place to start. Idles kinda choppy sometimes its not really a miss its just not cummins smooth like it should be. Any advice?????
 
You can stretch the spring in the OFV for now. That is free, but fuel pressure and timing next for sure. What DVs does it have? IIRC 131s (stock in the 160) will flow decent. What turbo are you running and is it building boost like it should?
 
It has the stock hx35 and a boost elbow. it boosts ok'ish. If I hold the brake and matt the pedal it will spool up and burnout, not start over fueling like it should do. When Im driving if I floor it it will rev up to 3k and hold there for a couple seconds then shift, once in 2500 rpm range it pulls decent. then 3k and nothing then shift, back into the powerband. It shouldnt have ANY fuel leaks I just installed the airdog 150. I have no idea what DV's are in it. I am assuming stock. BTW I cant believe I had a response already, It would be weeks on cumminsforum. I am a mechanic, but this is my first time messing with a P-pumped 24v. If yall can point me in the right direction Im sure we can accomplish something. I have been reading ALOT about these swaps and how to get them setup right. I hope I'm on the right track! I ordered a tork tek 42-47 psi OFV tonight.
 
Oh I also have my AFC backed all the way off and the smoke screw cranked in about 2 turns. I will tune accordingly once I feel like I get adequate fuel.
 
Slide the afc full forward,loosen the star wheel, get fuEl pressure, verify shut off solenoid is all the way up.

Tork tek sells a nice ofv.. timing is nice.. drink beer.
 
Here's another thing.. It doesn't have a shut off solenoid it's on a pull to stop cable like a tractor. PO said "$90 was too much to spend" I would love to have a shut down solenoid!
 
I actually had this exact same issue with a truck a couple years ago. It was for a customer and it flat would not fuel. I switched everything. Injectors, dv, AFC, lift pump, ofv, ect. Decided to put a different set of gov springs in and found the gov in the pump was shot. Swapped pumps and problem solved.
 
That would totally make sense disturbed! Its like the governor starts working wayyyy too early. I just checked a couple of things, 1. The shutoff arm is all the way up so that is fine. 2. Im not sure how much tension should be on the OFV spring but mine is about the equivalent of an ink pen. I want to do a 4k gov spring swap but Im not ready to do head studs and valve springs yet I dont have the funds at the moment. Can I put the 4k's in and just not get too rowdy? I really just want a nice daily driver!
 
IMO, 4ks are fine with stock springs. Put more tension on the OFV spring till the tork tek gets there. I have mine stretched so I can barely make the threads catch to tighten it (that's using a screwdriver to pry down on it while i turn it). If you can afford the downtime send the pump off to be gone through and have the gov springs tuned.
 
I really don't have the time to do that unless its absolutely the pump that needs rebuilt. Im going to try everything else first. if nothing else when I finally do get it fueling right this truck will be a freaking monster. I only have $8k in the truck and its VERY clean, ppumped, and 4x4 with new wheels and tires. You guys are awesome. How could I stretch my spring in the OFV? It looks like there is a big ball bearing pressed into the end of the bolt then the spring and little check ball.
 
You need a ofv that comes apart. Will have a 2nd hex nut in the center of the ofv that you take out to rebuild it. Some have them some don't. Some you can't take apart
 
All the 12 valve OFVs I have seen, you could take apart. That's good to know.

Op, you could try to pinch the return line and see if that helps. A pipe cutter w/o the blade will work well.
 
Alright Ill try that. I ordered a set of 4k gov springs today too. It's only money right? After I get these two things on later this week ill post up my results. You guys have been awesome.
 
I've had 4k gov Springs + valve Springs since 07 and have only been past 3k a hand full of times. Drive ability is much better.
 
These are all things I like to hear! What valve springs do we run on our 24v's when you upgrade?
 
60lbers on the exhaust.

The governor springs recurve the fuel map. They don't add any more fuel. But they stretch it out. And you don't have to wind it out every single time to feel it. You will notice it at all engine speeds.
 
Thats what Im after! Isn't it kind of surprising though that it doesnt smoke at all given my setup?
