01 electronic cruise doesn't work

This truck is an 01 dodge 3500 dually quad cab, 6 speed, stock. Has electronic controlled cruise, not vacuum so don't tell me i'm an idiot and go check vacuum lines like everybody on cf kept saying. Had truck for about 4 years now and it never has worked. The yellow word "cruise" by the odometer is lit all the time. Cant turn it off. Switches on the steering wheel don't change anything. No codes in pcm or ecm. Brake lights are on all the time. The light that says 'brakes' and then the abs lamp are both lit all the time.

Speedo and tach works.

ECM is good I think, no codes and it runs good, so as far as I can tell it works right. I noticed that the previous owner replaced the ecm with one that came out of a 2000 dodge 3500 4x4 6 speed. Perhaps the ecm's are different from 2000 to 2001 between the 6 speeds, I don't know. Are all 6 speed trucks from 2000 H.o.s?? That might be the problem or it might be wired different internally cuz don't 2000 dodges have vacuum cruise? I don't know just brainstorming.

Both front wheel speed sensors and hubs are new.

You need an 01 ECM the 2000 did not have ECM controlled cruise so it will not work to run your cruise. I could have sworn that 02 was the first year of ECM controlled cruise???????????

Know how much new one from dodge is by chance?

Haha that's why I got kicked off CF, nobody over there would believe me that an 01 could have ecm controlled cruise. I am pretty sure 01 and 02 HO 6 speed trucks had ecm controlled cruise, I was not sure about 2000 h.o. motors with the 6 speed. Or even if they made the 245 hp motor in 2000 year trucks?? I know the 6 speed was offered then but it had the smaller input shaft.

01.5+ have electronic cruise (and rear disks).

Previous years have vacuum.

AHHHH... ok, this truck does have rear disks so it must be.... OK cool I was wondering about that. So y'all think it must be the wrong ecm right?? Thats what I was thinking.

Ok so if I get another ecm from a junkyard, is it just plug and play? Or do I need a drb 3

They are backwards/forward compatible for engine controls for 01-01.5-02 as far as I know.

I ran a 01.5 ECM in my 01 without issue... So it really does beg the question on if the cruise is actually controlled by the ECM or the BCM or something else...

I would ASSUME (and you know what that means...) that you have the incorrect ECM, and that is why the cruise is not working.

You may also talk to Bob Wagner if you are a Smarty customer. Maybe (just assuming again!!) an 01 ECM flashed with Smarty software would have the correct provisions for the cruise control. However, it is also possible (and plausible) that the section of the ECM that controls cruise isn't touched during a Smarty flash.... So you would need the 01 ECM no matter what Smarty software you have.

Was it working before and just stopped? Or has it never worked?

I have been wanting a smarty for a while, but haven't got around to ordering one....

It never worked as far as I know, guy I got the truck from died and i bought it from his wife she had no idea about it... Hasn't worked in the 4 years I have had this thing....

Wouldn't happen to still have that 01.5 ecm would ya??? haha.

Honestly.....

I don't know.

lol.

I'd have to look in the parts closet. I THINK I'm running an 01 ecm now.. and I THINK I gave the 01.5 back to the friend that loaned it. I'll check though.

Haha ok no probs I appreciate you helping me out anyway i really do.

So let me get this right, ALL 01 - 02 ECMs are compatible? Lets say will a 235, 460 ecm off an 01 5 speed work with a 245 505 motor? I didn't know exactly if there were different ECMs for the different motors and trannys. Asked on Cumminsforum but that went nowhere productive and ended up with some moderator banning me this site is MUCHHHHH better. :Cheer:

I used a 2001.5 SO ECM in my 2001 HO pickup.

It worked fine.

I don't see an issue.. However, you read threads here all the time about how someone swapped an SO vp44 onto an HO truck, and suddenly their truck runs like complete crap... Should it? No. Does it happen? Sure sounds like it.

I would just try to find an 01.5-02 ecm.

OK cool. Did you have to get it reflashed at the dealer? Or just plug it in and go about your business?

Plug and go.

What's a little weird is that my vacuum cruise control continued to work even though, technically, I don't think the ECM should have had anything to do with that cruise control...

Which makes me think it MIGHT be controlled by something else. I just honestly do not know. All I'm basing my opinion about your problem on is the fact that you are pretty sure it is the wrong ECM.... Is it possible you could buy an 02 ECM and still have problems? I hate to say it.. But yes, yes it is.

Awesome :Cheer: thanks for the lowdown.

Weird.... I just don't know really what it could be if it might not be the ecm. Pcm maybe, I could try to get another one of them... Cuz all I know is that this thing is all i see with key in run engine running

Hood is open on this thing more than it's shut:nail:. Oh well still infinitely better design than a v8 diesel.

I dont suppose you would also know where the odometer reading is stored? Pcm maybe? What i am wondering is if I swap ecms with another motor, will the mileage on that other motor show up on my odometer? Or is that number stored in a hard drive or something in the cluster itself or the pcm? Sorry, I tried searching for this stuff, but it just is too hard to dig up the right answers.

mileage is not stored in the ecm, easy swap if you want to try to correct the software is its not a match.

edit send me the ecm and i will flash the correct software into it. price is right :lolly:

:Cheer:I can't tell if you were being serious or not bout the barbecue sauce pm lol, but if you are I really would pay you to do it if you were for real.

btw, anybody be able to tell me exactly what would i need to buy to get setup to do this kinda thing? Is it cummins insight that y'all mainly use on these? or have these ecm's been dodgeified from the get go where you cant use cummins stuff on them?

bringing this to the top, got another ecm from a junkyard and my cruise still dont work. Is it a problem with the PCM maybe?

ttt. I called two dodge dealers and nobody can help me. They don't even know their own pickup they made.

Could be an issue with the clock spring. Both my 01's had them fail which resulted in the cruise not working. There was a recall on them for the 01's.
