Im looking at buying an 01 cummins h.o. The truck has 281k on it. Is that too many miles? should i be worried about it breaking down right away. The guy said that it has newer injection and lift pump. He wants 6500. The truck has little rust. Needs tires etc... But i just wanna know if you guys would be afraid to get this. It would need to be my daily driver. Thanks in advance guys

I bought a 94 with 324k on it and it was my daily driver for about 40k when I sold it to my dad. It is still his dd with 383k on it.

Nice. Anything i should look for when purchasing the truck. I have been told that if it sounds like a diesel... and isnt blowing a **** ton of smoke and rattling, that it is running good. Im not an idiot when it comes to diesels, i have been around them enough, but im no expert. I will check the oil obviously and the radiator to make sure it dont have crap in it. Anything else... especially with a 24v. I have never had a 24v. Is the price right? thanks guys

reg or quad cab? 2wd 4wd auto manual? if it's factor lift pump then worry about fuel pressure. price depends on details of truck really.

4x4. quad cab. int is decent. little rust. short box. brush guard. needs tires. 75 hp edge chip. sorry for not noting those things. thanks

You need to drive it and see what condition the front end is in... Check for death wobble, see how it starts on a cold morning after sitting for awhile. And grab a cheap fuel psi gauge and check pressure after the lift pump, bad lift pump can mean dead injection pump. Other than that the old cummins should be good for couple hundred more thousand

If i buy it, i would be purchasing it from a distance... about 400 miles or so away. so is there an easy and quick way to check the fuel pressure? thanks again

I am getting ready to buy an 01 this week all similar except mileage and mine is a dually but I am taking a fuel pressure gauge with me to put on the fuel filter housing to check it when I get to the dealer. I think if I remember that idle pressure is no less than 9psi. If it isn't that on mine than my haggle price just went down a couple thou or my stay will be extended till it is fixed

Call it a minimum of 10 PSI and go from there!

Also, I'm pretty sure that the 01 is like my 02, the place to check the fuel pressure with a hand held gauge is a schaeder valve located on the VP44.

Good luck!

yeah they don't have the same filter housing so there is no port there. gotta do it at the vp

is 6500 a good price for mine then?? how much nicer is the H.O.?

The H.O. is not really any better or worse than a standard output. The factory rating difference is just 10 horsepower.

In fact, in a high performance application, like 500+ HP, the standard output is preferred because it's injection pump is slightly larger internally.

For a daily driver, the only real difference in HO vs SO is the HO came with a 6 speed transmission that has the same overall top gear ratio, just has an extra gear between 3rd and 4th.

The 6 speed transmission is a little bit stronger than the 5 speed, but it costs about 3 times as much to rebuild. Once again, in a non high performance application, both transmissions will last just as long and should be good for 200-500K miles depending on driver shifting habits.

From all the prices I have seen while trying to find mine I would say yes it is a good price. If the truck is everything you want I say go for it.

On a side note it is good to know that I am going to have to hook my gauge up a little differently but I will be checking one way or another. Is the shrader valve in clear sight at the vp?

Yes the shrader valve is right at the IP inlet connection.

You can go to your local Harbor Freight store and get the cheap fuel injector test kit. That will work just fine for checking FP on trucks.
